Exile is a 17-member Japanese boy band. Hiro is the group's leader, who debuted as a member of Zoo under For Life Music, but Exile have released their singles and albums under Avex Group's label Rhythm Zone. Hiro and Avex's president Max Matsuura came from the same high school. In 2003, the six original members of Exile founded the management and entertainment company LDH which has debuted many successful groups and soloists ever since. Exile is the representative group of the company.

Junko Sakurada is a Japanese singer and actress. She was part of a music trio in 1973, which included Momoe Yamaguchi and Masako Mori. Sakurada then became successful in a solo music career, with 18 top ten singles in the 1970s. Her acting career ran from 1973 to 1993. She received multiple awards for her acting roles, including the Hochi Film Award, Award of the Japanese Academy, Kinema Junpo Award, and Mainichi Film Concours. Following her marriage, in a Blessing ceremony of the Unification Church in 1992, she retired from performing. In 2013, Junko Sakurada made a comeback.

Yukihiko Tsutsumi is a Japanese television and film director. He began directing commercials and music promotion videos as an employee of Nippon Television. After spending time abroad, he returned and started his own production company, Office Crescendo, from which he works independently. His first television drama on Nippon Television was called Kora! Tonneruzu and ran from 1985 to 1989. He directed Taitei no Ken, an original work by Baku Yumemakura, in 2007.

The Japan Record Award for Best New Artist (最優秀新人賞) is awarded annually. Until the 10th Japan Record Awards it was called the New Artist Award. Starting with the 11th, it has been called the Best New Artist Award. All artists awarded the New Artist Award are automatically nominated for the Best New Artist Award.

The 59th Japan Record Awards was held on 30 December 2017. The Tokyo Broadcasting System Television network televised the show live from the New National Theatre Tokyo in Tokyo. Radio broadcast was through TBS Radio. The broadcast ran from 18:30 (JST) to 22:00 (JST). Yūki Amami and Shinichiro Azumi hosted the ceremony for the second time. The nominations and award winners were announced by TBS on 16 November 2017.

Naomi Sagara is the stage name of Nahoko Yamaguchi, an award-winning Japanese popular singer who was prolific between 1967 and 1980. She won numerous awards as a singer and composer, branching into acting. After a surgery to remove polyps on her vocal cords in 1985, she became a business woman. Since 1993, she has worked in the field of animal welfare and has published several books about animal care. She has periodically returned to television in guest appearances and in 2010 resumed singing and composing.
