The 49th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
The 49th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered into federal service on December 31, 1861.
At February 3rd, 1862, It was Ordered to Cairo, and on the 8th, moved to Fort Henry, where it was Assigned to The Third Brigade, McClernand's Division; on the 11th, it moved to Fort Donelson and; On the 13th, it took part in the battle, losing 14 Killed and 37 Wounded. Among the Wounded was Colonel Morrison, Commanding the Third Brigade, It Remained at Fort Donelson until March 4th, when it moved to Metal Landing, And on the 6th, Embarked for Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, It Disembarked at Savannah, and on the 21st, Moved to Pittsburg Landing. The Regiment was Later Engaged at the Battle of Shiloh, On April 6th and 7th, 1862, Losing 17 Killed and 99 Wounded, Among the Wounded was Lieutenant Colonel Pease, who commanded the regiment, and Major Bishop. [2]
The Regiment , It later participated at the Siege of Corinth, and on June 4th, Moved to Bethel, and was Assigned to Brigadier General John A. Logan's First Division, District of Jackson, With Major General John A. McClernand Commanding. [1]
