The 5th Nigerian Academy of Science Media Awards ceremony honoring Broadcast Journalist and Newspaper Columnist of 2014 was held at the Conference Room C of the Protea Hotel, Isaac John Street, GRA Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria on May 7, 2015. [1] [2]
Entries were open for the award in March 2015 and closed on April 1, 2015. The article submission must have been aired or published between January and December 2014 and only one entry is permitted per applicant. [3] Entries for the Print category must consist of a scanned copy of the original article, without any form of alteration to the content of the original published article. Folashade Adebayo, The Punch Newspaper Columnist emerged winner in the Print Category for her two-part article on the coverage of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in 2014. [4] The first part of the article was titled "A Walk Through The Valley of Ebola" and the second part titled "Ebola: Nigerian Health workers Take Battle to the Lion’s Den as its headline. [5] Vvienne Irikefe, a Television Continental's correspondent emerged winner in the Broadcast Category and Jennifer Igwe, an editor of the Nigerian Television Authority emerged as runner-up in the same category. The Nigerian Academy of Science is the official science academy of Nigeria. The academy of science was established on 18 January 1977, as an association of Nigeria's foremost scientists, but incorporated in 1986. It is the apex scientific organization in Nigeria. The Academy acts as a scientific advisor to the Federal Government of Nigeria, funds research fellowships, and scientific start-up companies. The Academy is governed by its council, which is chaired by the academy's president, according to a set of Statutes and Bye-laws. The members of council and the president are elected from, and by its Fellows. The basic members of the Academy are also elected by existing Fellows. The academy is also a member of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC).
The Nigerian Academy of Science Media Awards are media awards presented annually to recognize outstanding science reporting. The award was founded in 2010 by the Nigerian Academy of Science to honor broadcast journalists and Newspaper columnist who published science-related articles, such as articles on health, technology and environment. The award presentation is often attended by numerous media representatives, politicians, celebrities, journalists across the world. The most recent ceremony, honouring journalists in 2017, was held at Sheraton hotel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony way, Maryland, Lagos State, Nigeria on August 10, 2017.
