The 711th Infantry Division was a division of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), first formed in early 1972.
The Division was initially formed from the 31st and 32nd Regiments in early 1972 and the 97th Regiment was added to it in May 1972. [1] :287
On 19 August 1972, the ARVN 5th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division abandoned Firebase Ross in the Que Son Valley, 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Da Nang, to the Division. A dozen BGM-71 TOW missiles were left with abandoned equipment and fell into PAVN hands. [2] The ARVN 4th Regiment recaptured Ross on 9 September 1972. [3]
In the 1975 Spring Offensive on the morning of 24 March the Division, backed by armored elements, seized Tam Kỳ, driving the population north toward Da Nang.

The Battle of Xuân Lộc was the last major battle of the Vietnam War. From the beginning of 1975, People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces swept through the northern provinces of South Vietnam virtually unopposed. Da Nang Air Base (1930s–1975) was a French Air Force and later Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF) facility located in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam. During the Vietnam War (1959–1975), it was a major base with United States Army, United States Air Force (USAF), and United States Marine Corps (USMC) units stationed there. Air Vietnam also used the facility from 1951 to 1975 for civilian domestic and international flights within Southeast Asia.
The First Battle of Quảng Trị resulted in the first major victory for the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) during the Easter Offensive of 1972. Quảng Trị Province was a major battleground for the opposing forces during the Vietnam War. As South Vietnamese soldiers were gradually replacing their American counterparts, North Vietnam's General Văn Tiến Dũng was preparing to engage three of his divisions in the province. The Vietnamese Rangers, properly known in Vietnamese as the Biệt Động Quân (En:Commando) and commonly known as the ARVN Rangers, were the light infantry of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Trained and assisted by American Special Forces and Ranger advisers, the Vietnamese Rangers infiltrated beyond enemy lines in search and destroy missions. Initially trained as a counter-insurgency light infantry force by removing the fourth company each of the existing infantry battalions, they later expanded into a swing force capable of conventional as well as counter-insurgency operations, and were relied on to retake captured regions. Later during Vietnamization the Civilian Irregular Defense Group program was transferred from MACV and integrated as Border Battalions responsible for manning remote outposts in the Central Highlands.

At the beginning of 1966, the number of U.S. military personnel in South Vietnam totaled 184,314. The Hue–Da Nang Campaign was a series of military actions conducted by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) against the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) during the Vietnam War, also known in Vietnam as the American War.
