97 Field Regiment is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army.
The regiment was raised on 1 August 1963 at Namkum. During this period, the Regiment has held a variety of equipment, ranging from 3.7 inch Howitzer, 42" Mortar, 25 Pounder, Indian Field Gun (IFG), Light Field Gun (LFG) & the mighty Soltam. The Regiment had its baptism with fire when it participated in Operation ABLAZE (1965) soon after its raising. It was also active in quelling civil unrest, supporting police operations which targeted mostly Muslims during the 1979 Jamshedpur riot. [1]
