Alexander Donald Henry "A.D.H." Fossey was an American politician who served as the 17th mayor of Miami from 1935 to 1937.
Fossey was born in England,marrying his wife Eliza in 1903. He was a member of the Merchant Marine. [1] In 1906 they moved to the U.S.
Fossey was President of the Miami Board of Realtors. He was affiliated with the Orange Bowl committee.
He owned a fruitpacking and fertilizer business and was successful until the Great Depression. [2]
Fossey was elected to the city commission in 1933. This set him up to be mayor. In 1935 Fossey was named city mayor by the city commission. The Miami Herald disagreed with his elevation in a May 23,1935 editorial. [3] Fossey was accused of real estate fraud while still in office. [4]
The Fosseys had four children. [5] Their son,Ralph Fossey worked in real estate and entered politics like his father,notably becoming Dade County Commissioner and later Mayor of the controversial town of Islandia,FL. [6]

John Wellborn Martin was an American politician who served as the 24th Governor of Florida,from 1925 to 1929. He also served as Mayor of Jacksonville,Florida,from 1917 to 1923. Born in Plainfield in Marion County,Florida,Martin and his family moved to Jacksonville in 1899. Despite only about four years of formal education,he studied law and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1914. Three years later,Martin ran for Mayor of Jacksonville and easily defeated incumbent J. E. T. Bowden,becoming the city's youngest mayor at age 32. He was easily re-elected twice in landslide victories and served three consecutive terms.
Joseph Xavier Carollo is a Cuban-American politician who served as mayor of Miami from 1996 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2001. Following his loss in the 2001 mayoral election,he served as Doral,Florida city manager from January 2013 until his firing in April 2014;he was reinstated in June 2017,then immediately resigned. He successfully ran for election to the Miami city commission in 2017.

"When the looting starts,the shooting starts" is a phrase originally used by Walter E. Headley,the police chief of Miami,Florida,in response to an outbreak of violent crime during the 1967 Christmas holiday season. He accused "young hoodlums,from 15 to 21",of taking "advantage of the civil rights campaign" that was then sweeping the United States. Having ordered his officers to combat the violence with shotguns,he told the press that "we don't mind being accused of police brutality". The quote may have been borrowed from a 1963 comment from Birmingham,Alabama police chief Bull Connor. It was featured in Headley's 1968 obituary published by the Miami Herald.
