A. H. S. Ataul Karim (c. 1932 - 28 July 2010) was a Bangladesh diplomat, foreign secretary, [1] and former Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States. [2] He was also a Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations. [3]

Career

Ataul Karim served as the chairperson of a meeting of foreign secretaries of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries from 28 March to 30 March 1983. [4]

In 1986, Ataul Karim served as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in Geneva. [5]

On 16 August 1988, Ataul Karim was appointed the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations. [6]

In 1991, Ataul Karim was appointed the head of the United Nations Mission in Cambodia, UN Advance Mission in Cambodia (UNAMIC), [7] and Chief Liaison Officer. [8] Previously he was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States. [9] [10]

Death

Ataul Karim died on 28 July 2010 at the Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from lung cancer. [3]

The foreign relations share the Bangladeshi government's policies in its external relations with the international community. The country pursues a moderate foreign policy that places heavy reliance on multinational diplomacy, especially at the United Nations and World Trade Organization (WTO). Since independence in 1971, the country has stressed its principle of "Friendship towards all, malice towards none" in dictating its diplomacy. As a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Bangladesh has tended to not take sides with major powers. Since the end of the Cold War, the country has pursued better relations with regional neighbours.

Ismat Jahan is a Bangladeshi diplomat who is currently serving as the Permanent Observer of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to the European Union. From 2009 to 2016, she was Ambassador of Bangladesh to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union and from 2007 to 2009, she was the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
