A. K. M. Nurul Islam (died 14 November 2015) was a Bangladeshi judge and the vice president of Bangladesh from 1986 to 1989.
Islam was born to M. Abdus Sobhan and Atafunnesa Khanam. He completed a master's degree in English literature at Calcutta University in 1947. He earned an LLB in 1950. [1]
Islam was a judge of the East Pakistan High Court from 1967 to 1971. [2]
He was the chief election commissioner of Bangladesh Election Commission from 1977 to 1984. [3] From February 1985 until August 1989,he served as the law minister. [3] In 1986,he was the member of parliament for Manikganj-2. [4] He was appointed as the vice president of the country on 1 December 1986 by the then President Hussain Muhammad Ershad. [5]
He was replaced as vice president in August 1989. [6]
Islam was married to Jahanara Arzu,an Ekushey Padak-winning poet. [2] [7] Together they had two sons including Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and a daughter,professor Minara Zahan. [3]
Islam died on 14 November 2015 in Dhaka. He was buried in Harirampur in Manikganj District. [8] [9]
Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet,short story writer,journalist,lyricist and musician. He is the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul produced a large body of poetry,music,messages,novels,and stories with themes,that included equality,justice,anti-imperialism,humanity,rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī",meaning "the rebel" in Bengali,earned him the title of "BidrohīKôbi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Gīti.
Nurul Amin was a Pakistani politician and jurist who served as the eighth prime minister of Pakistan from 7 December to 20 December 1971. His term of only 13 days as prime minister was the shortest served in Pakistani parliamentary history. He was also the only vice president of Pakistan.
Manikganj is a district in central Bangladesh and part of the Dhaka Division. It was established in 1845,it was a subdivision of Faridpur District until,in 1953,it was transferred to Dhaka District for administrative purposes. In 1984,Manikganj was declared a full district.

Jahanara Arzu is a Bangladeshi poet. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1987 by the Government of Bangladesh for her contribution to Bengali literature. Arzu and Sufia Kamal were the founding editors of Sultana,the first women's weekly published from East Bengal on 14 January 1949.
The military coup in Bangladesh on August 15 of 1975 was launched by mid-ranking army officers in order to assassinate founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,whose administration post-independence grew corrupt and reportedly authoritarian until he established a one-party state-based government led by the socialist party Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League. Mujib,along with his resident family members,were killed during the coup but was survived by his two then-expat daughters,one of them being future prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The officers were led by Capt. Abdul Majed,Maj. Sayed Farooq Rahman,Maj. Khandaker Abdur Rashid and Maj. Shariful Haque Dalim.

The Jail Killing refers to the murder of four leaders of the Awami League political party in Bangladesh by army officers who carried out a coup d'état there on 15 August 1975. The four killed were former President Syed Nazrul Islam,former prime ministers Tajuddin Ahmad and Muhammad Mansur Ali,and President of Awami League A. H. M Qamaruzzaman.
