The AA Rosette is an award recognizing culinary excellence in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Restaurants are rated from one to five rosettes. [1]
It was established in 1956.
In January the AA would publish its Guide to Hotels and Restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland, from 1967. [2] The rosettes would be listed in this guide. [3] The AA hotel classification would work with the British Hotel, Restaurant and Catering Association.
In 1972, two hotels and six restaurants (four were in London) received the three-rosette award. Of London's AA five-star hotels, only the restaurant at The Connaught had the three-rosette award. One of the four London restaurants with three rosettes was Le Gavroche. The 1972 guide called for 'more adventurous regional cooking'. Outside of London there were four three-rosette establishments, including The Box Tree and the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, with head chef Jean-Maurice Cottet. [4] Sixteen hotels, out of the 4,150 hotels listed, had the five-star classification.
In 1992 the classification was increased to five rosettes.

The Michelin Guides are a series of guide books that have been published by the French tyre company Michelin since 1900. The Guide awards up to three Michelin stars for excellence to a select few establishments. The acquisition or loss of a star or stars can have dramatic effects on the success of a restaurant. Michelin also publishes the Green Guides, a series of general guides to cities, regions, and countries.
Tom Aikens was a London Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant operated by the eponymous chef from April 2003 opening to January 2014 closure. The restaurant received mostly positive critical reception.
Richard Corrigan is an Irish chef. He serves as the chef/patron of Corrigan's Bar & Restaurant Mayfair, Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill, Daffodil Mulligan Restaurant & Gibney's Bar in London, Virginia Park Lodge and adjoining pub the Deerpark Inn in Virginia, County Cavan, and most recently The Portrait Restaurant, located on the top floor of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
L'Enclume is a restaurant opened in 2002 in Cartmel, Cumbria, England, run by chef Simon Rogan and his partner Penny Tapsell. L'Enclume received a rating of 10 out of 10 five times in the Good Food Guide and named their top restaurant for the fourth consecutive year in the 2017 guide, and placed second in the 2018 guide. It has received three Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes.
Zafferano is a restaurant in London, originally run by Giorgio Locatelli on behalf of A–Z Restaurants until 2005. The restaurant was awarded one Michelin star in 1999, which it held until 2012.
Armstrong's Barn is a defunct restaurant in Annamoe, County Wicklow, Ireland that was awarded a Michelin star in 1977.
House is one of the restaurants at the Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, County Waterford, Ireland. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded a Michelin star for each year in the period 2010 to present. Bridgestone Guides also lists the hotel as one of the 100 Best Places To Eat. Journalist Pol O Conghaile listed the hotel and restaurant on his The travel hot list 2010 in the Irish Independent.
Martijn Kajuiter is a Dutch Michelin star winning head chef with Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, County Waterford.
Pétrus is a restaurant in London, which serves modern French cuisine. It is located in Kinnerton Street, Belgravia and is part of Gordon Ramsay restaurants owned by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's Gordon Ramsay Restaurants Ltd. It has held one Michelin star since 2011, and 3 AA Rosettes.
Hibiscus was a London restaurant which was owned and run by French chef Claude Bosi. It was opened in 2000 in Ludlow, Shropshire, and won its first Michelin star within a year, and a second in the 2004 Guide. In July 2006, Bosi and his wife Claire announced that they were to sell the location in Ludlow and move closer to London. The property was sold to Alan Murchison, and Bosi purchased a new site on Maddox Street in London. The restaurant closed in 2016.
Nico Ladenis was a British self-taught chef who was the first to gain three Michelin Stars.
Mark Greenaway is an Edinburgh-based chef and restaurateur. He is chef and owner of Restaurant Mark Greenaway, voted one of the UK's Top 100 Restaurants in 2017, and holds three AA Rosettes. Greenaway represented Scotland on BBC2's Great British Menu in 2012 and 2013.
The Angel Hotel is an AA 4-star Grade II listed hotel and inn at 15 Cross Street, in Abergavenny, Wales. It lies on the corner with Lower Castle Street and the main commercial street, Cross Street.
The Restaurant Marco Pierre White, also known as The Restaurant, Restaurant Marco Pierre White and later Oak Room Marco Pierre White, was a restaurant run by chef proprietor Marco Pierre White. The Restaurant was opened at the Hyde Park Hotel, London, on 14 September 1993, after White left his previous restaurant, Harveys. Following the move, the kitchen staff was more than doubled in number, and White used Pierre Koffmann's La Tante Claire as a template to pursue his third Michelin star. This was awarded in the 1995 Michelin guide. White then moved the restaurant to the Le Méridien Piccadilly Hotel, London, in 1997, taking on the listed Oak Room as the main dining room. He sought a further rating of five red forks and spoons in the guide, to gain the highest possible rating for the restaurant. It gained this award in the following guide.
Wild Honey Inn, located in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, is Ireland's only Michelin star pub with 14 rooms and has a four-star guesthouse rating. It was awarded a Michelin star in 2017.
Peel's Restaurant is situated in Hampton Manor, Hampton-in-Arden. It currently holds one Michelin star and four AA Rosettes. Hampton Manor is a Grade II listed building. Originally the family home of Frederick Peel, son of Prime Minister Robert Peel, the Manor was acquired by hoteliers Derrick and Janet Hill in March 2008. Under the stewardship of their son, James, and daughter in law Fjona, today it runs as a Restaurant with Rooms.
Ynyshir is a restaurant in Eglwys Fach, Ceredigion, Wales. It is run by chef patron Gareth Ward and has been awarded two Michelin stars.
