The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) proposes to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kerala. [1]
According to a 2025 RTI response, the Health Ministry asked the Finance Ministry for "in-principle" clearance, and the Ministry suggested that it be included in the upcoming PMSSY phase.[ citation needed ] The program's continuation after 2025–2026 is being assessed. The current phase expires in March 2026. There hasn't been any official approval yet.[ citation needed ]
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda have been urged by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to approve the establishment of an AIIMS Kozhikode in Kinaloor as soon as possible. [8] [9] To demonstrate its commitment, the state government has already set aside and purchased land for this prestigious medical facility. Kerala has been calling for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences for the past ten years. The Chief Minister underlined that the state is prepared for the project because it has fulfilled all directives from the federal government regarding land acquisition.
Kerala state have suggested four different sites which is rejected by Central government. [10]
Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, recently stated in Parliament that none of the four locations—including Ernakulam district—that the State government had suggested for the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been approved in the current phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
