It is also known as Lake Agios Vasileios after the village Agios Vasileios and as Lake Langadas after the town Langadas, and is located about 14 kilometres east of Thessaloniki city centre. The motorway Egnatia Odos passes along the north side of the lake, and the old Greek National Road 2 passes along the south side. The lake is shared by the municipalities Langadas and Volvi.

Lagkadas is a town and municipality in the northeast part of Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. There are 37,022 residents in the municipality and 8,447 of them live in the community of Lagkadas (2021). Lagkadas is located northeast of Thessaloniki, at a distance of about 20 km from its center and at an altitude of about 130m, in the center of the valley of Mygdonia, through which Alexander the Great passed at his campaigns and also the Apostle Paul towards Thessaloniki and Athens. The climate is continental. Nearby is Lake Koroneia. The Sanjak of Salonica, Selanik, or Thessalonica was a sanjak of the Ottoman Empire.
