History

Following the merger of ASPIDER and MEC Solutions in 2004, the company traded as ASPIDER Solutions. Following the acquisition of NGI in 2014 the company traded as ASPIDER-NGI. ASPIDER sold aspects of its M2M business in 2010 to Wyless [1] (which was subsequently purchased by Kore Wireless [2] ).

ASPIDER is traditionally known as a Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE), delivering services to a variety of operators and MVNOs and MNOs (Postmobile, [3] Vodafone [4] and T-Mobile). More recently,[ when? ] the company has been delivering services to Enterprises, Manufacturers and other MVNEs (SURFnet, [5] and has announced partnerships with other companies for the use of eSIM in IoT initiatives (IDEMIA, [6] Oracle). [7]

ASPIDER's promotion of eSIM [8] is notable[ tone ] because, when the initial specifications were announced, they were limited mainly to use-cases around operator selection and Remote SIM provisioning.[ citation needed ] ASPIDER has promoted additional use cases more for enterprise applications - like authentication and identity management. The company has been working with industry groups like BTG [9] to get pilots off the ground with companies like SURFnet.[ tone ]

Operations

ASPIDER operated from a number of datacenters around the world and the largest of these was based in Malta. The Maltese operation included a full core network that interconnected to a number of operators, in particular with Vodafone Malta [4] in order to launch a number of MVNOs in Malta. The core network components featured the usual manufacturers in Cisco [10] and Oracle, [11] but also smaller specialist vendors like Blueslice [12] and BroadForward. [13] ASPIDER had also acquired technologies from eSERVGlobal for a variety of messaging and communications components. [14]

Locations

The company headquarters are in the Netherlands, with offices in Belgium, UK, USA, France, New Zealand and Malta. In previous years[ when? ] the company also had offices in Seattle (US), Ireland and Egypt.[ citation needed ]

Machine to machine (M2M) is direct communication between devices using any communications channel, including wired and wireless. Machine to machine communication can include industrial instrumentation, enabling a sensor or meter to communicate the information it records to application software that can use it. Such communication was originally accomplished by having a remote network of machines relay information back to a central hub for analysis, which would then be rerouted into a system like a personal computer.

Remote SIM provisioning is a specification realized by GSMA that allows consumers to remotely activate the subscriber identity module (SIM) embedded in a portable device such as a smart phone, smart watch, fitness band or tablet computer. The specification was originally part of the GSMA's work on eSIM and it is important to note that remote SIM provisioning is just one of the aspects that this eSIM specification includes. The other aspects being that the SIM is now structured into "domains" that separate the operator profile from the security and application "domains". In practise "eSIM upgrade" in the form of a normal SIM card is possible or eSIM can be included into an SOC. The requirement of GSMA certification is that personalisation packet is decoded inside the chip and so there is no way to dump Ki, OPc and 5G keys. Another important aspect is that the eSIM is owned by the enterprise, and this means that the enterprise now has full control of the security and applications in the eSIM, and which operators profiles are to be used.
