A Heavy Heart (German : Herbert) is a 2015 German drama film directed by Thomas Stuber. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. [1]
The former East German professional boxer Herbert earns his living as a debt collector and bouncer. Besides, he trains the upcoming boxer Eddy. At the first time Herbert gets muscle cramps, he tries to cover them up, but eventually he is diagnosed with ALS. Now he has to learn to live with restrictions, cramps and a wheelchair while his former environment has no need for him. His protégé Eddy also finds a new coach. His girlfriend Marlene accompanies him on his way. For years his work had been more important to him than his family. Now he tries to get to know his daughter Sandra and his granddaughter Ronja and to reconcile.
Herbert was produced by Departures Film and made in co-production with deutschfilm, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, ARTE and Hessischer Rundfunk. The film was supported by Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Deutscher Filmförderfonds, Beauftragte für Kultur und Medien, Kuratorium junger deutscher Film and Filmförderungsanstalt.
Herbert is the first feature-length film by Thomas Stuber. The film represents Stuber's second collaboration with Departures Film, following the short film Von Hunden und Pferden. As in Stuber's previous works Von Hunden und Pferden and Teenage Angst, Peter Matjasko was responsible for the camera. Stuber wrote the screenplay together with Leipzig-based author Clemens Meyer, who already wrote the original short story of Von Hunden und Pferden.
The film was shot in Leipzig and Halle in 35 days in the spring of 2014. Actor Peter Kurth worked up 16 kilograms of muscle mass for the role and starved it off during filming to portray Herbert's decline. The film was therefore filmed in chronological order. Kurth's acting starts out strongly physical and becomes more and more restricted until it is almost limited to the face. When Herbert also loses his voice, the acting is completely limited to his eyes. [2]
Director Thomas Stuber sees the film as a reverse boxing film. In the classic American boxing film, he says, there is a young guy from nowhere who works hard, fights his way to triumph, and wins recognition and happiness. Herbert, on the other hand, is a film about the decline of a once great boxer.
Wild Bunch/Senator Film released Herbert in German theaters nationwide in spring 2016. Picture Tree International was handling worldwide distribution.

Zar und Zimmermann is a comic opera in three acts, music by Albert Lortzing, libretto by the composer after Georg Christian Römer's Der Bürgermeister von Saardam, oder Die zwei Peter, itself based on the French play Le Bourgmestre de Saardam, ou Les deux Pierre by Mélésville, Jean-Toussaint Merle, and Eugène Centiran de Boirie. Günter Kochan was a German composer. He studied with Boris Blacher and was a master student for composition with Hanns Eisler. From 1967 until his retirement in 1991, he worked as professor for musical composition at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". He taught master classes in composition at the Academy of Music and the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He was also secretary of the Music Section of the Academy of Arts from 1972 to 1974 and vice-president of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR from 1977 to 1982. Kochan is one of eleven laureates to have been awarded the National Prize of the GDR four times. In addition, he received composition prizes in the US and Eastern Europe. He became internationally known in particular for his Symphonies as well as the cantata Die Asche von Birkenau (1965) and his Music for Orchestra No. 2 (1987). His versatile oeuvre included orchestral works, chamber music, choral works, mass songs and film music and is situated between socialist realism and avant-garde.

Herbert Köfer was a German actor, voice artist, and television presenter. He was the first German TV news presenter for the East German Deutscher Fernsehfunk, and also presented the station's last news before the reunification of Germany. His first theatre engagement was in 1940, and he kept acting until the age of 100. Köfer played an SS-Hauptsturmführer in the 1963 film Nackt unter Wölfen. He was known for detective series such as Polizeiruf 110 and for comic roles. He founded his own troupe, Köfers Komödiantenbühne, in 2003, and published memoirs.
Peter Kurth is a German actor. He won the 2016 German Film Award for Best Actor for portraying a former boxer diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the drama film A Heavy Heart.
MDR Rundfunkchor is the radio choir of the German broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), based in Leipzig, Saxony. Dating back to 1924, the choir became the radio choir of a predecessor of the MDR in 1946, then called Kammerchor des Senders Leipzig, or Rundfunkchor Leipzig.
