Abbas Nasir is Pakistani journalist and former editor of Pakistan's English language daily DAWN . [1] [2] Previously he was the head of the BBC Urdu Service, where he has been appointed as Executive Editor for the Asia and the Pacific Region at BBC World Service. [3] [4] [5]
Nasir began his journalism career in the early 1980s at the daily newspapers Dawn and Muslim. He later joined the monthly current affairs magazine Herald . In May 1994 he joined the BBC Urdu Service while also serving as the chief political correspondent with the English daily The News International . Later he became head of the BBC Urdu service and helped found their website in October 1999. While with the BBC, he also worked on as an analyst on their The World Today programme. [3] [4] He was replaced by Zaffar Abbas as editor of Dawn in October 2010. [5]

Modern Standard Hindi is mutually intelligible with Urdu, the national and official language of Pakistan. Both are standard registers of the Hindustani language. As a result of linguistic and cultural similarities, Hindi has had notable influences in Pakistan and is taught as an academic subject in some institutions; before the partition of colonial India, Hindi was taught at major universities in the provinces that came to form Pakistan. While Hindi and Urdu both have a predominantly Indic (Indo-Aryan) base, Hindi uses more Sanskrit words in its educated vocabulary while Urdu incorporates more Arabic, Persian, and a few Turkic words for the same.
