Abdul Jalil is a former Sergeant of the Pakistan Air Force and accused in the famous Agartala Conspiracy Case. He is a recipient of the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh. [1] [2]

Career

Jalil was part of a conspiracy that sought India's help for the independence of Bangladesh. [3] In response the Pakistani government detained them and filed the Agartala Conspiracy Case. [3] [4] Jalil was part of Biplabi Sangstha, an organization of Bengali soldiers in the Pakistan military services, that sought to work for the independence of Bangladesh. [5] He trained other soldiers in the use of grenades; one of which was presented as evidence in the case and is preserved in the Bijoy Ketan Museum of Dhaka Cantonment. [5] Jalil was sent into forced retirement from the Pakistan Air Force and subsequently could not join the Bangladesh Air Force. [5]

Since the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the government of Bangladesh has framed the case as a conspiracy to foil the Six point movement in the history textbooks of the country. [3] Jalil has called that a historical distortion as the accusations in the case were true. [3]

In December 2015, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina donated 3 million taka from government funds to Jalil. [5]

In 2022, Jalil was awarded the Independence Day Award by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for his contribution to Bangladesh Liberation War. [6] There had been demands in the past that the government award all the accused in the conspiracy case with the Independence Day Award. [1] [7]

The Bangladesh Liberation War started on 26 March and lasted till 16 December 1971 which is celebrated as Victory Day in Bangladesh. There is a dispute along partisan line on who declared the Independence of Bangladesh. The Awami League claim Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party claim it was Ziaur Rahman.

The Agartala Conspiracy Case was a sedition case in Pakistan during the rule of Ayub Khan against Awami League, brought by the government of Pakistan in 1968 against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then leader of the Awami League and East Pakistan, and 34 other people.

Mujibnagar, formerly known as Baidyanathtala (Boiddonathtola) and Bhoborpara, is a town in the Mujibnagar Upazila of Bangladesh. Zahurul Haq was a Pakistan Air Force sergeant. He was one of the 35 persons accused in the Agartala Conspiracy Case in 1969. He was killed in custody and his death led to increase in 1969 uprising in East Pakistan. He received the Independence Day Award from the Government of Bangladesh in 2018.

Moazzem Hossain was a Pakistan Navy Lieutenant Commander and an accused of the Agartala Conspiracy Case. He was killed by the Pakistan Army during Bangladesh Liberation war.

The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers were part of a conspiracy to assassinate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Founding Father of Bangladesh, who led the independence struggle during the Bangladesh Liberation War and later served as the first and fourth President and later in between his two presidential terms served as the second Prime Minister of Bangladesh from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed during the coup, with the exception of his two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.

Bhupati Bhushan Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Politician and businessman. He was awarded Independence Day Award in 2018 posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh.

Abdur Rauf was a commander of the Bangladesh Navy, and a politician. He served as a member of the presidium of the People's Forum. He was one of the accused in the Agartala conspiracy case filed in 1986. In 2011, the Bangla Academy awarded him an honorary fellowship. For his special contribution in the war of liberation, the government of Bangladesh posthumously awarded him the Independence Day Award in 2020.

Tawfique Nawaz is a Bangladeshi lawyer and director of Transparency International Bangladesh. He is married to Dipu Moni, the Minister of Education and former Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is a senior advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Provincial elections were held in East Pakistan on 17 December 1970, ten days after general elections. A total of 1,850 candidates ran for the for 300 seats in the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League, which won 288 of the 300 seats.

Khan Shamsur Rahman, also known as Khan Mohammad Shamsur Rahman, was a Bangladeshi diplomat and the first ambassador of Bangladesh to the Soviet Union. He was the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India.
