Varahagiri Venkata Giri was an Indian politician and activist from Berhampur in Odisha who served as the 4th president of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974. He also 3rd vice president of India from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969. He is the first president to be elected as an independent candidate. He was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as president in 1974. After the end of his full term, Giri was honoured by the Government of India with the Bharat Ratna in 1975. Giri died on 24 June 1980.

Jairam Ramesh is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. He is a Member of Parliament representing Karnataka state in the Rajya Sabha. In July 2011, Jairam was elevated to the Union Council of Ministers of India and appointed Minister of Rural Development and Minister of the new Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. He was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 1972-74. He was a minister (1952–56) in U. N. Dhebar ministry when 'United State of Kathiawar' was formed. He became M.P. in 1957 when he won Lok Sabha seat from Surendra Nagar. In a very closely contested Loksabha election of Rajkot constituency in 1971, Ghanshyam Oza defeated Minoo Masani of the and became a minister in the cabinet of PM Indira Gandhi.

He became the first person outside the Nehru–Gandhi family to be the president of the party after 24 years. In his tribute read out in Rajya Sabha by the then vice president, Dr. Hamid Ansari, he was described as a distinguished parliamentarian, a veteran freedom fighter and a distinguished trade unionist.
