Bilateral foreign relations between the Republic of Abkhazia and Nicaragua were established on September 5, 2008, when Nicaragua extended diplomatic recognition to Abkhazia. [1]
At a press conference in November 2008, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez said, "Certainly, we think that the decision [to recognize independent Abkhazia and South Ossetia] was fair and appropriate. They [the republics] must be given time for inner formalities. We will coordinate the possibility and terms of direct diplomatic relations at a convenient moment. Obviously and logically, we will be acting via our friends, probably Russia, to establish closer contacts and diplomatic relations [with the republics]." [2]
Abkhazia and Nicaragua formally established diplomatic relations on September 10, 2009, after an Abkhazian delegation visited with President Daniel Ortega in the Central American nation. [3]
From 18 to 21 July 2010, a state delegation from Abkhazia visited Nicaragua headed by President Bagapsh. [4] On 19 July, the delegation was joined by a delegation from South Ossetia headed by President Eduard Kokoity. [5] On the same day, both Presidents attended the official events to the 31st birthday of the Sandinist Revolution. [6] On 20 July, the Presidents of Abkhazia and Nicaragua signed agreements on friendship and cooperation, visa-free travel up to 90 days, trade-economic relations, commercial shipping, air services and cooperation between the National Bank of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Central Bank of Nicaragua. The Presidents also awarded each other the highest decorations of their countries. [7]
On 16 April 2012, Abkhazia opened an embassy in Nicaragua when Zaur Gvajava (already ambassador to Venezuela) received his credentials from President Alexander Ankvab. [8] On 27 June 2012, the Nicaraguan ambassador Luis Cuadra presented his credentials to Abkhazia's Foreign Minister Viacheslav Chirikba and to President Ankvab. [9] [10]
When inauguration of then-President of Abkhazia, Raul Khajimba in September 2014, the Nicaragua Delegation also represented and headed by Minister of Natural Resources Nicaragua attending inauguration of Raul Khajimba as the President of Abkhazia. The formal meeting was also held to strengthen bilateral ties between two countries as confirmed in the meeting with Chirikba in Sukhumi.
On 5 July 2016, Nicaragua's new ambassador Juan Ernesto Vasquez Araya presented his credentials to Chirikba and to President Raul Khajimba, and invited Khajimba to visit Nicaragua. [11] [12] Ambassador Araya appointed as Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Nicaragua to Russia and Abkhazia after Luis Cuadra was appointed as Vice Foreign Minister of Nicaragua. During the occasion, Chirikba expressed Abkhazia's intention to open a diplomatic mission in Managua.
During Daur Kove tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, several Official and Working Visit was held to strengthen bilateral relationship between Abkhazia and Nicaragua, in January 2017 for the re inauguration of Daniel Ortega, in July 2019, July 2020 and July 2021 respectively during Sandinistas Revolution celebration. In recent 2021, Daur Kove also signing Bilateral Cooperation Plan for 2022 and the Agreement on Sister Cities between Sukhumi and Managua with Minister Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, Denis Moncada led Abkhazian delegation to be observer on the Presidential Election 2021 on 7 November 2021.
In 2019, both countries also deliver the credentials for both Ambassador, from Abkhazia side still hold by non-resident ambassador, Zaur Gwajava as Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Ambassador of Abkhazia to Venezuela and Nicaragua, and Alba Acusena Torres Meija as Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Ambassador of Nicaragua to Russian Federation and Abkhazia.
In 2020, an honorary consul was appointed by the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia, Alba Acusena Torres Meija. Alias Khashba was appointed as the Nicaraguan honorary-counsel to Abkhazia.
By the Presidential Decree of the Abkhazia President, Aslan Bzhania, on 22 November 2021, the Embassy of the Abkhazia to the Nicaragua was established. It was upgraded after since 16 April 2012, the Embassy was approved with non-resident status that hold by Abkhazia Ambassador to Venezuela, Zaur Gwajava. Then, since 22 November 2021, the Embassy of Abkhazia to Nicaragua was formally launched by the Abkhazia Government.
Raul Jumkovich Khajimba is an Abkhazian politician who served as President of Abkhazia from 25 September 2014 until 12 January 2020. He was also Chairman of the Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia from 2010 to 2015. Khajimba previously held the offices of Vice President (2005–2009), Prime Minister (2003–2004) and Defence Minister (2002–2003). He unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, 2009 and 2011. He resigned the presidency in 2020 due to protests against him.
The office of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia was created on 17 May 1993, during the 1992–1993 war with Georgia. Empirical data nevertheless show that Abkhazia's Foreign Ministry also enacts diplomatic relations, such as the sending of diplomatic notes, with various countries across the world, including Nauru, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Syria. It is also active in managing relations with other post-Soviet de facto states such as South Ossetia, Transnistria, and the Lugansk People's Republic.
Sergei Shamba is a senior politician from Abkhazia. He is currently a member of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia and Chairman of United Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister of Abkhazia under President Sergei Bagapsh from 13 February 2010 until 27 September 2011. Between 1997 and 2010 he had been Minister for Foreign Affairs under both Bagapsh and his predecessor Vladislav Ardzinba, with only a half-year interruption in 2004. Shamba has twice unsuccessfully participated in presidential elections, in 2004 and 2011. He has been a staunch proponent for dialogue between Abkhazia and Georgia.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia are separatist regions of Georgia in the Caucasus. Most countries recognise them as part of Georgia, while Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria regard them as independent. Russia's initial recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occurred in the aftermath of the Russo-Georgian War in 2008. The government of Georgia considers the republics to be Russian-occupied territories.

Igor Muratovich Akhba is an Abkhaz diplomat and politician. From 2008 until 2021 he was the first ambassador of the Republic of Abkhazia to the Russian Federation, and in 2004 he was for a short time the Minister for Foreign Affairs of his country.
Abkhazia–Venezuela relations refers to bilateral relations between the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia and Venezuela. Venezuela recognised Abkhazia, along with South Ossetia, on 10 September 2009, almost ten years after the country declared independence from Georgia in 1999. Venezuela was the third state to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia, after Russia and Nicaragua.
Abkhazia and Vanuatu established relations when Vanuatu recognised Abkhazia's independence on 23 May 2011. On that day a joint statement on establishment of diplomatic relations was signed. However, the exact nature of the recognition was a matter of dispute and was not regularized until July 2013. However, over the years and part of domestic powerplay within Vanuatu's government, the recognition has swung back and forth. In 2019 Vanuatu's minister of Foreign Affairs "confirmed Vanuatu’s support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity" and effectively withdrew the recognition of Abkhazia.
Abkhazia–Transnistria relations is the bilateral relationship between the Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic and the Republic of Abkhazia, two mostly unrecognized states in Eastern Europe. Both states recognize the independence of each other.
Oleg Botsiev is the current ambassador of South Ossetia to Abkhazia. He was appointed to the position by President Leonid Tibilov on 15 April 2013. On 19 August, Botsiev presented his credentials to Abkhazian Foreign Minister Viacheslav Chirikba, and on 20 August, to President Alexander Ankvab. Previously, Botsiev had been the Minister for Labour and Social Security of Abkhazia from December 1999 onwards, and Chief of the Cabinet Staff from 8 May 2003 until in 2005 Vladislav Ardzinba was succeeded by Sergei Bagapsh as President of Abkhazia.
Viacheslav Chirikba is a linguist and politician from Abkhazia. He was Minister for Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia between 2011 and 2016.
