Early life

Abraham Stephanos was born to Mr. K. A. Thomas and Mrs. Annamma on 11 June 1969. [1] [2]

Metropolitan

He was elected as the Metropolitan candidate on 25 February 2022 at the Malankara Association held at Kolenchery.

Abraham Stephanos belongs to the parish of St. George Orthodox Church (Valiyapalli), Mylapra under Thumpamon diocese. He completed his primary education from Seventh Day Adventist School, Pathanamthitta (1974-78), and Marthoma High School (1978-84), following which he completed Pre-Degree course (1984-86) as well as degree in Mathematics (1986-89) from Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta . He joined Kottayam Old Seminary (1995-99) and completed BD as well as GST . He also completed M.Th (2000-02) from FFRRC, and an MA in Late Antiquity and Byzantine Studies from King's College London. He was ordained sub-deaconship (1998) by Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan at Mar Basil Dayara, Pathanamthitta. Further, he was ordained deaconship (1999) by Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II Catholicos at St. Thomas chapel in Old Seminary, Kottayam , and priesthood on 8 th April 2000 by Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan at St. George Orthodox Church, Mylapra . He was chosen as Metropolitan in the Malankara Syrian Christian Association held at Kolencherry on 25 th February 2022 . He received the status of Ramban at the Parumala Seminary on 2 June 2022. He was ordained as Metropolitan with the name 'Mar Stephanos' by Baselios MarThoma Mathews III Catholicos at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pazhanji on 28 th July 2022.

The Malankara Metropolitan or the Metropolitan of Malabar is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of the Malankara Syrian Church. It evolved from the title of the sixteenth century East Syriac metropolitans of India who were also styled the Metropolitan of Malabar. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III is the present Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, serving as its primate. He was enthroned as the 22nd Malankara Metropolitan on 14 October 2021 and as the 9th Catholicos on 15 October 2021 at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Parumala, succeeding Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.

Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos aka Puthencavil Kochu Thirumeni was an administrator, orator and an advocate of Orthodox and the Catholicate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. He served as Metropolitan of Thumpamon Diocese from 1930 to 1951.

The position of Priest Trustee in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is of paramount importance in the administration of the Church, together with the Malankara Metropolitan and the lay trustee. The priest trustee is a priest of order Kasheesha or Cor-Episcopa.

Thumpamon Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The diocese was created after the Mulanthuruthy Synod in 1876. H.G. Abraham Mar Seraphim is the Metropolitan of the diocese. The head office is located in St. Basil Aramana, Pathanamthitta. The diocese was named Thumpamon Diocese, opted from "Thumpamon pally" where St.Gregorious of Parumala had lived his ministerial life and had been in the administration of Thumpamon diocese.

Kottayam Central Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The diocese was created in 1982. This diocese is in the direct control of Catholicos of the East .The current Metropolitan of the diocese is the Malankara Metropolitan H.H Baselios Marthoma Mathews 3. The head office is located in Devalokam Aramana, Kottayam.

The Order of St. Thomas is the highest honorary award given by the Indian Orthodox Church and named after St. Thomas the Apostle who founded the Church in India. It is reserved for heads of states and churches and awarded by the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, who is the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Church. The award is usually presented at large public gatherings held at different locations of importance to the Indian Orthodox Church within India.

Geevarghese Mar Pachomios is a metropolitan of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
