The Adam NZ Play Award is an annual award in New Zealand given to new plays. There are a range of categories and submitted plays are read blind by a panel of industry professionals. [1]
The award started in 2008 and was initially called the Playmarket New New Zealand Play Award. [2] The Adam Foundation support the awards with a total of $8,000 in prizes. [3] The Adam Foundation was established by Denis and Verna Adam in 1976 initially for art and then for other creative endeavours. Denis Adam died in October 2018. [4] There is also an Adam Foundation Prize in Creative Writing.
In 2019, Mitch Tawhi Thomas became the first playwright to win an Adam NZ Play award twice, the first for Hui in 2012 and then for Pakaru (in 2019). [5]
The winners are announced at a ceremony each year. [6]
The panel accepts up to three new plays but only be submitted to the competition once. There are no style or length limits. The plays must not have had a professional production (upcoming productions, readings, workshops or community productions are acceptable). The cut off is the 1 December each year. [1] [2]

2008: Ninna Tersman for Fucking Parasites. This was work-shopped in London, directed by Lorae Parry with script advisor Tanika Gupta.
2009: Pip Hall for The 53rd Victim won the New Play Award. The 53rd Victim, and Sketch by Kate Morris were also selected for rehearsed public readings as part of the Aotearoa Playwrights Conference New Writing / New Producing Forum at the Auckland Festival. [2]
2010: Stuart Hoar for Pasefika. The Best Play by a Māori Playwright: Whiti Hereaka for Te Kaupoi. Special Prize for a Woman Playwright: Fiona Samuel for The Liar's Bible. Special Prize for an Auckland Playwright: Tom Sainsbury for The Canary.
2011: Arun Subramaniam for Hero. Runners-up: Courtney Meredith for Rushing Dolls and Georgina Titheridge for Sliderhands. Best Play by a Pasifika Playwright: Maureen Fepulea'i for e ono tama'i pato. Best Play by a Māori Playwright: Whiti Hereaka for Rona and Rabbit on the Moon. Best Play by a Woman Playwright: Georgina Titheridge for Sliderhands and Courtney Meredith for Rushing Dolls. Patricia Frances Grace is a New Zealand writer of novels, short stories, and children's books. She began writing as a young adult, while working as a teacher. Her early short stories were published in magazines, leading to her becoming the first female Māori writer to publish a collection of short stories, Waiariki, in 1975. Her first novel, Mutuwhenua: The Moon Sleeps, followed in 1978.
Hone Vivian Kouka is a New Zealand playwright. He has written 13 plays, which have been staged in New Zealand and worldwide including Canada, South Africa, New Caledonia and Britain. Kouka's plays have won multiple awards at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards, the 'Oscars' of New Zealand theatre. Kouka has also worked as a theatre director and producer. In 2009, Kouka was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to contemporary Māori theatre.
Riwia Brown is a New Zealand playwright. She is the screenwriter of the popular and award-winning New Zealand movie Once Were Warriors (1994). The Once Were Warriors screenplay, adapted from the book of the same name by Alan Duff, gained Brown the Best Screenplay award at the 1994 New Zealand Film and TV Awards. Brown has written for theatre, television and films.
The International Institute of Modern Letters is a centre of creative writing based within Victoria University of Wellington. Founded in 2001, the IIML offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses and has taught many leading New Zealand writers. It publishes the annual Ōrongohau | Best New Zealand Poems anthology and an online journal, and offers several writing residencies. Until 2013 the IIML was led by the poet Bill Manhire, who had headed Victoria's creative writing programme since 1975; since his retirement, Damien Wilkins has taken over as the IIML's director.
White Lies - Tuakiri Huna is a 2013 New Zealand film directed by Dana Rotberg and stars Whirimako Black, Antonia Prebble, and Rachel House. It is based on the novella Medicine Woman by Witi Ihimaera. Regarded as an excellent portrayal of colonial oppression in New Zealand, the film deals with the impacts of the Tohunga Suppression Act upon Māori traditions surrounding childbirth.
Mīria George is a New Zealand writer, producer and director of Māori and Cook Island descent. Best known for being the author of award-winning stage plays, George has also written radio, television and poetry, and was one of the film directors of the portmanteau film Vai. In November 2005, she won the Emerging Pacific Artist's Award at the Arts Pasifika Awards. Mīria George was the first Cook Islands artist to receive the Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency at the University of Hawai'i.
Sam Brooks is a New Zealand playwright and dramatist. Brooks' works have appeared on stage in Auckland and throughout New Zealand, often produced through his company, Smoke Labours Productions. Brooks' work has twice earned him the Playmarket B4 25 New Zealand Young Playwright award. He has also been nominated for the Chapman Tripp award for Outstanding New Playwright and was highly commended for the Adam New Zealand New Play of the year award. In 2014, Metro Magazine named Brooks "Auckland's Most Exciting Playwright". He won the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award in 2016. He is a contributing writer to The Spinoff, an online commentary and opinion magazine where he was previously culture editor. He has also written for Pantograph Punch, Metro magazine, and The New Zealand Herald.
Maraea Rakuraku is a Māori playwright, poet, short story writer, and broadcaster from Aotearoa who is also working on her first full-length novel. Rakuraku belongs to the Ngāi Tūhoe. She is a doctoral student in the International Institute of Modern Letters of Victoria University of Wellington, where she earned an MA in 2016.

Albert Alexander Amahou Belz is a New Zealand actor, writer and lecturer.
Whiti Hereaka is a New Zealand playwright, novelist and screenwriter and a barrister and solicitor. She has held a number of writing residencies and appeared at literary festivals in New Zealand and overseas, and several of her books and plays have been shortlisted for or won awards. In 2022 her book Kurangaituku won the prize for fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards and Bugs won an Honour Award in the 2014 New Zealand Post Awards for Children and Young Adults. She lives in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Bruce Mason Playwriting Award is an annual award that recognises the work of an outstanding emerging New Zealand playwright. The winner is decided by the votes of a panel of leading New Zealand artistic directors and script advisors.
Alice Te Punga Somerville is a poet, scholar and irredentist. Dr Te Punga Somerville is the author of Once were Pacific: Māori connections to Oceania which provides the first critical analysis of the disconnections and connections between 'Māori' and 'Pacific'. Her research work delves into texts by Māori, Pacific and Indigenous peoples that tell Indigenous stories in order to go beyond the constraints of the limited stories told about them. In 2023 she won New Zealand's top award for poetry, the Mary and Peter Biggs Award for Poetry, for her collection Always Italicise: How to Write While Colonised.
The Kia Mau Festival, previously called Ahi Kaa Festival, is a biennial performing arts festival in Wellington, New Zealand. In te reo Māori, kia mau is "a call to stay - an invitation to join us".
Ninna Tersman is a Swedish playwright, dramaturg and translator. She has written more than twenty plays, and has won the Critic's Prize for Best Production of the Year, and the Adam NZ Play Award.
Catherine Patricia Downes is a New Zealand theatre director, actor, dramaturg and playwright. Of Māori descent, she affiliates to Ngāi Tahu. Downes wrote a one-woman play The Case of Katherine Mansfield, which she has performed more than 1000 times in six countries over twenty years. She has been the artistic director of the Court Theatre in Christchurch and the director of Downstage Theatre in Wellington. She lives on Waiheke Island and works as a freelance actor, director and playwright.
Miriama McDowell is a New Zealand actor, director and playwright. She is a graduate of Toi Whakaari.
Jason Te Kare is a New Zealand director, playwright and actor.
Tawata Productions is contemporary Māori and Pasifika performing arts company established in 2004 based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), New Zealand. They produce theatre, screen and digital work as well as the festivals: Kia Mau, Breaking Ground and the Pūtahi Festival. Tawata showcases work by Māori, Pasifika and Indigenous writers and makers and is led by Hone Kouka and Mīria George.
Leki Jackson-Bourke is a playwright based out of Auckland and is the first Pasifika playwright to win the Creative New Zealand Todd New Writer's Bursary Grant in 2018.
