The Adjutant General of Massachusetts is the highest-ranking military official in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is subordinate to the Governor of Massachusetts. The Adjutant General is a member of the Governor's Cabinet and advises the Governor on military and emergency management matters. [1]

The Adjutant General is the principal military advisor to the Governor and is also responsible for the organization, training and supervision of the Massachusetts National Guard and the Massachusetts State Defense Force.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Massachusetts State Defense Force</span> Military unit

The Massachusetts State Defense Force (MSDF) is the currently inactive state defense force of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It was inactivated in 2016 by Governor Charlie Baker. The purpose of the Massachusetts State Defense Force, when active, is to augment the Massachusetts National Guard during emergencies in the state, especially when some or all of the National Guard was deployed. The MSDF is an all-volunteer militia which reported to the State Adjutant General and was under the command of the Governor of Massachusetts. Members met for drills one weekend per month unless activated by the Governor during an emergency. The MSDF was headquartered at Milford, Massachusetts, in the same building as the Massachusetts National Guard. The director of the MSDF was appointed by The Adjutant General of Massachusetts (TAGMA). The Massachusetts State Defense Force is authorized by both the Constitution of Massachusetts and chapter 33 § 10 of the Massachusetts General Laws.

Lieutenant General Leon Scott Rice is a former director of the Air National Guard. He previously served as The Adjutant General (TAG) and Commander of the Massachusetts National Guard and as an assistant to Gen Mark A. Welsh III, former commander of the United States Air Forces in Europe. Rice has also served as commander of USAF Forces deployed for United States Central Command in the Middle East Area of Operations. He is a Boeing 777 first officer flying for United Airlines in Washington Dulles International Airport. On 3 April 2012 he was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick as The Adjutant General (TAG) of the Massachusetts National Guard and reappointed as The Adjutant General by Governor Charles Baker on 12 May 2015. Rice retired from the U.S. Air Force on 1 August 2020 after over 40 years of service.

Each state in the United States has a senior military officer, as the state adjutant general, who is the de facto commander of a state's military forces, including the National Guard residing within the state, the state's naval militia, and any state defense forces. The Puerto Rico Adjutant General is the commander of the Puerto Rico National Guard. As the adjutant general he is also the senior military advisor to the Governor of Puerto Rico and oversees both State and Federal Missions of the Puerto Rico National Guard. He provides leadership and management in the implementation of all programs and policies affecting more than 10,500 citizen-soldiers and airmen, and civilian employees of the three components of the PR National Guard: Puerto Rico Army National Guard, Puerto Rico Air National Guard and Puerto Rico State Guard. It is the responsibility of the Adjutant General of the Commonwealth to share his reports with the Secretary of the Army or the Secretary of the Air Force.

The Adjutant General of Connecticut is the highest-ranking military officer in the Armed Forces of the State of Connecticut which includes the Connecticut National Guard, the four units of the Governor's Guards, the Connecticut State Guard, the Connecticut State Guard Reserve and the Connecticut Naval Militia. The current Adjutant General is Major General Francis J. Evon, Jr. He was appointed to a four-year term effective July 1, 2018.

George Malpas Cole, was the thirty-second Adjutant General of the State of Connecticut. He was the son of George Cole and Jane A. Malpas. Born in Portsmouth, England, his family moved to Massachusetts where his father was a civil engineer. Cole was educated in public and private schools. Cole was also tutored by his father, where he became an assistant to his father. Cole would later become associated with a wholesale and a grain business in New London.

Major General Tracy R. Norris was the Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard from 2019 to 2022. Norris was the first female commander of the Texas Military Department, an organization composed of the Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard, and the Texas State Guard.
