Inhabitants are dominantly Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri with some other groups such as Tiv, Yoruba, Igbo, Igala etc. The dominant occupation of the inhabitants is crop-farming and animal rearing which a considerable percentage, engaged in trading, fishing and services including civil service. The people of Haɗeja are largely Muslims, although some follow indigenous belief systems. The town lies to the north of the Hadejia River, and is upstream from the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands. Hadejia is an internationally important ecological and sensitive zone.

Abdulaziz Usman Tarabu is a Nigerian senator who represents the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State. He became a member of the Nigerian Senate in 2007.

Sabo Mohammed Nakudu CON is a senator representing Jigawa South West District, Jigawa State, Nigeria. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) He was once a Member of the Governing Board, Federal University of Technology Minna. He was also the Chairman Jigawa State Presidential Committee on Solid Mineral. He served in the Federal House of Representative for two tenures (2007-2011) and (2011-2015). He also serves as Senator Federal Republic of Nigeria between 2015 and 2019. He was declared winner for Jigawa South West Senatorial District by The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Adamu Isge. He announced that Sabo scored 224,543 votes to defeat his PDP opponent, Mustapha Sule Lamido, who scored 143,611 votes. Following the 2019 election, Sabo Nakudu was assigned the chairman senate committee on downstream (petroleum) resources. This later led to him chairing the Ad-hoc Committee on the longstanding PIB. The Senate on Thursday 1 July 2021 passed the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) after nearly a year of deliberation. Having been revised on many occasions throughout the past thirteen years since it was first presented to the National Assembly in 2008, the PIB comprises a combination of 16 Nigerian petroleum laws that outline the governance framework that will attract investors into the country.

The 2003 Jigawa State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on April 19, 2003. The ANPP nominee Ibrahim Saminu Turaki won the election, defeating Mohammed Alkali of the PDP.

The 2023 Jigawa State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Jigawa State, concurrent with elections to the Jigawa State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election — which was postponed from its original 11 March date — was later scheduled to hold three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Deputy Governor Umar Namadi held the office for the APC by a margin of 24% over PDP nominee Mustapha Sule Lamido — a businessman and son of former Governor Sule Lamido.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Jigawa State was held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Jigawa State. Sabo Mohammed representing Jigawa South-West and Danladi Abdullahi Sankara representing Jigawa North-West, and Ibrahim Hadejia representing Jigawa North-East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress.

The 2015 Nigerian Senate election in Jigawa State was held on March 28, 2015, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Jigawa State. Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel representing Jigawa North West, Mohammed Sabo representing Jigawa South West and Muhammad Shitu representing Jigawa North East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress.

The 1999 Nigerian Senate election in Jigawa State was held on February 20, 1999, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Jigawa State.
