Ahmed Majan (born c. 1963 [1] ) is an Emirati inventor. Majan is a retired army major in the UAE Armed Forces who obtained an engineering degree in Greece. [2] [3]

Inventions

His inventions include a "smart saddle" for racehorse training which contains solar-powered electronic devices that measure the heart rate of the animal being trained, the rider's weight, a compass and a location tracker, a device to cool the animal's body temperature during exercise in warm climates, and a hidden camera. [4]

Awards

As of 2015, his inventions have won a total of fourteen awards at the British Invention Show (British Inventors Society) in London (2013, six medals), [3] the International Trade Fair for Ideas, Inventions and New Products (IENA) in Nuremberg (2014, four medals), [2] and the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva (2015, four medals). [5] [6] He is in the Guinness Book of World Records for building the world's largest bicycle. [1] Majan is also one of the awardees of the UAE Pioneers Award in 2014 [7]

Granville Tailer Woods was an American inventor who held more than 50 patents in the United States. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars. One of his inventions is the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, a variation of the induction telegraph that relied on ambient static electricity from existing telegraph lines to send messages between train stations and moving trains.

Human Rights in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are substantially restricted. The UAE does not have democratically elected institutions and citizens don't have the right to change their government or form political parties. Activists and academics who criticize the government are detained and imprisoned, and their families are often harassed by the state security apparatus. There are reports of forced disappearances of foreign nationals and Emirati citizens, who have been abducted, detained and tortured in undisclosed locations, and denied the right to a speedy trial and access to counsel during investigations by the UAE government. Human Rights Watch states that Emirati laws maintain capital punishment and discriminate against women, migrants and LGBT individuals.

Human rights in Dubai are based on the Constitution and enacted law, which promise equitable treatment of all people, regardless of race, nationality or social status, per Article 25 of the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates. Despite this, Freedom House has stated: "Extreme forms of self-censorship are widely practiced, particularly regarding issues such as local politics, culture, religion, or any other subject the government deems politically or culturally sensitive. The Dubai Media Free Zone (DMFZ), an area in which foreign media outlets produce print and broadcast material intended for foreign audiences, is the only arena where the press operates with relative freedom."

According to Human Rights Watch, there is substantial discrimination against women in the United Arab Emirates. The status of women has improved over the years. UAE performs better on metrics of gender equality than many other states in the Gulf region, and it has been making reforms to protect women's rights and empower women in different sectors. Critics describe some of these reforms as window dressing.

Hassan Sharif was an Emirati artist and prolific writer. He lived and worked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is widely regarded as a central figure in contemporary and conceptual art in the region, often known as the father of conceptual art in the Gulf. He founded Al Marijah Art Atelier, and through his extensive work and writings, he inspired the next generation of artists in the United Arab Emirates. His work is represented in major public collections, such as the Guggenheim New York, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Centre Pompidou, Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Sharjah Art Foundation.

Abbas Khan was a Pakistani squash player. In 1978, he obtained his career-best ranking, 7th.
