Maldives National Defence Force is the national military responsible for defending the security and sovereignty of the Maldives. It is primarily responsible per the constitution to defend and protect the Republic,its territorial integrity,its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and the people. Its branches include the Maldivian Coast Guard,the MNDF Marine Corps,and MNDF Air Corps.

Shaheed is also the Chairperson of the Geneva-based international human rights think-tank,Universal Rights Group,which was launched in January 2014. He now lives in England as a Professor of Human Rights Practice at the University of Essex. Shaheed is also a Senior Fellow at Raoul Wallenberg Human Rights Centre and a Fellow at the Bonavero Institute of Human rights at the Oxford university of Law.
Dhadimagu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah,Maldives. It is the largest division of the island,located in the northern part of the island. Throughout history,many scholars and famous public figures came into being from this district housing many of the historical sites and landmarks of the island. A center of learning as well as an important location for the island's economy,the number of 'Hafiz's and teachers from this district outnumber that of any other district in Fuvahmulah,and this district is considered by many to be the most educated and learning-centered district of Fuvahmulah.

He twice served as Minister of Fisheries,first from 1971 to 1975 and again from 1977 to 1978. Hilmy served as Minister of Agriculture from 1980 until his death in 1983.
