This district is known for the towns of Shirdi associated with Sai Baba, Meherabad associated with Meher Baba, Shani Shinganapur with Shanidev, and Devgad with Lord Dattatreya. Ahmednagar district is part of Nashik Division. The district is bordered by Aurangabad district to the northeast, Nashik district to the northwest, Thane and Pune districts to the southwest, Solapur district to the south and Beed district to the southeast.

The Ahmadnagar Sultanate or the Nizam Shahi Sultanate was a late medieval Indian Muslim kingdom located in the northwestern Deccan, between the sultanates of Gujarat and Bijapur, ruled by the Nizam Shahi or Bahri dynasty. Malik Ahmed, the Bahmani governor of Junnar after defeating the Bahmani army led by general Jahangir Khan on 28 May 1490 declared independence and established the Nizam Shahi dynasty rule over the sultanate of Ahmednagar. Initially his capital was in the town of Junnar with its fort, later renamed Shivneri. In 1494, the foundation was laid for the new capital Ahmadnagar. In 1636 Aurangzeb, then Mugal viceroy of Deccan, finally annexed the sultanate to the Mughal Empire.

Burhan Nizam Shah I was ruler of the Ahmednagar Sultanate, in Central India. He ascended the throne on the death of his father Ahmad Nizam Shah I in 1508 or 1510 when he was seven years old. He died in 1553 and was succeeded by Hussain Nizam Shah I.

Kashti is a panchayat village in the state of Maharashtra, India, on the left (east) bank of the Ghod River, across the river from the village of Tandali. Administratively, Kashti is under Shrigonda Taluka of Ahmadnagar District in Maharashtra. There is only the single village of Kasti in the Kashti gram panchayat. The railroad station is 5 km by road south of the village. Kasti is 16 km by road southwest of the town of Shrigonda, and 14 km by road north of the town of Daund.

Sina River is a large tributary of the Bhima river which is starting near Ahmednagar city. It has two chief sources, one near Jamgaon about 20 km. west of the town of Ahmednagar and the other near Sasewadi,Jeur about 16 km. to its north-east. For a distance of about 55 km. roughly, the river forms boundary between Ahmadnagar District on the one hand and Beed district on the other. On the right, it receives the waters of Mahekri, and ultimately joins the Bhima on the Karnataka State border. It has earth filled Sina Dam near Karjat in Ahmadnagar District.
