Local government in Scotland comprises thirty-two local authorities, commonly referred to as councils. Each council provides public services, including education, social care, waste management, libraries and planning. Councils receive the majority of their funding from the Scottish Government, but operate independently and are accountable to their local electorates. Councils raise additional income via the Council Tax, a locally variable domestic property tax, and Business rates, a non-domestic property tax.
Aberdeen Central is a burgh constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) covering part of the council area of Aberdeen City. It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the first past the post method of election. It is one of the ten constituencies in the North East Scotland electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to ten constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole.
The Politics of Aberdeen, Scotland have changed significantly in recent years. In 1996, under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, Grampian Regional Council and Aberdeen District Council were dissolved, creating the new unitary Aberdeen City Council to represent the city's council area.
The 2007 Aberdeen City Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Aberdeen City Council, at the same time as the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using 13 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with each ward electing three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation. The new wards replaced 43 single-member wards, which used the plurality system of election.

Peterhead South and Cruden is one of the nineteen wards used to elect members of the Aberdeenshire Council. It elects three Councillors.
East Garioch is one of the nineteen wards used to elect members of the Aberdeenshire Council. Until 2017 three councillors were elected in this ward following the fifth statutory Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland review 2016, now East Garioch elects four Councillors.
Dyce/Bucksburn/Danestone is a ward represented in the Aberdeen City Council. Barney Crockett of the Labour Party, and Neil MacGregor and Gill Samarai, both of the Scottish National Party have been councillors in the ward since 2017, whilst Graeme Lawrence of the Labour Party was elected in a by-election in 2023.

Douglas Aaron Lumsden is a Scottish Conservative Party politician. He has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the North East Scotland region since the election in May 2021. He was previously the co-leader of Aberdeen City Council.
Ian Gillan Yuill, is a Scottish politician who has served as councillor in Aberdeen, Scotland since 1994. A member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, he has served alongside Alex Nicoll of the Scottish National Party as Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council since 18 May 2022. He was previously the Depute Leader of Aberdeen City Council from 2003 to 2007 and Chair of NESTRANS from 2011 to 2012. Yuill was both Convener of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and Vice President of the UK Liberal Democrats between 1998 and 2002.
Elections to Aberdeen City Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections.
