Akmal Lewane was born in 1946 in the village of Shamozai, Mardan. [1] He attended school up to the second grade and learned to read and write but could not continue his education as he had to work in the fields with his parents. [2]

Career

Akmal Lewane Khan was associated with Tehreek Khudai Khidmatgar of Bacha Khan. [3] He was 15 years old when he wrote his first book of poetry "Yao So Galuna". His books of poetry include Lewantob, Chapawoona, Ajeeba Paigham and Tortam. He used to set up a stall to sell books at any literary or cultural event and earn enough profit to feed his family. [2]

Contributions to Pashto literature

Akmal Lewane was known for his unique style of expression and his witty humor. [2] He was an important part of Pashto literature and national movement. He was promoting book culture through his mobile stalls. He was a symbol of humor and nationalism. [4]

Illness and death

Akmal Lewane passed away on Thursday, 10 May 2024 after a prolonged illness. [5] [6] His funeral prayers were offered at village Shamuzai in Tehsil Katling Mardan. His funeral prayer was attended by a large number of people including writers, poets, journalists and political activists. [2]

Awami National Party Central President Aimal Wali Khan has expressed grief over the death of Akmal Levane. He said that Akmal Levane was an important part of Pashto literature and national movement. [4]

Pashto literature refers to literature and poetry in Pashto language. The history of Pashto literature spreads over five thousands years having its roots in the oral tradition of Tappa. However, the first recorded period begins in 7th century with Amir Kror Suri. Later, Pir Roshan (1526–1574), who founded his own Sufi school of thoughts and began to preach his beliefs. He gave Pashto prose and poetry a new and powerful tone with a rich literary legacy. Khair-ul-Bayan, oft-quoted and bitterly criticized thesis, is most probably the first book on Sufism in Pashto literature. Among his disciples are some of the most distinguished poets, writers, scholars and sufis, like Arzani, Mukhlis, Mirza Khan Ansari, Daulat and Wasil, whose poetic works are well preserved. Akhund Darweza (1533–1615), a popular religious leader and scholar gave a powerful counterblast to Bayazid’s movement in the shape of Makhzanul Islam. He and his disciples have enriched the Pashto language and literature by writing several books of prose.

Mohammad Tahir Khan Dawar was a Pakistani police officer who was abducted from Islamabad on October 26, 2018 and then tortured and killed. His body was found on November 13, 2018 by the locals in the Dur Baba District of Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, close to the Torkham border crossing. His postmortem report revealed he had no marks of bullet injury, but was rather killed by excessive torture during captivity. He was kept hungry and thirsty for several days, and his legs and arms were broken. He had died a few days before his body was found.
