Akmal Lewaney, known by his pen name Lewaney, was a Pashto language poet. He was born in 1946 in the village of Shamozai, Mardan District. Lewaney's education was limited to the second grade, but this did not hinder his literary journey. He started his career in poetry at the age of 15 with his first book of poetry "Yao So Gallona". Over the years, he wrote several notable works including "Lewantob", "Chapawoona", "Ajeeba Paigham", and "Toortam". Lewani was not only a poet but also an important part of the Pashto literature and national movement, known for his unique style of expression, witty humor and efforts to promote book culture through his mobile stalls. He died on 10 May 2024 after a long illness, leaving behind a rich legacy in Pashto literature. [1] [2]

Early life and education

Lewaney was born in 1946 in the village of Shamozai, Mardan. [3] [4] He attended school up to the second grade and learned to read and write but could not continue his education as he had to work in the fields with his parents. [5]

Career

Lewaney was associated with Tehreek Khudai Khidmatgar of Bacha Khan. [6] He was 15 years old when he wrote his first book of poetry "Yao So Galuna". His books of poetry include Lewantob, Chapawoona, Ajeeba Paigham and Tortam. He used to set up a stall to sell books at any literary or cultural event and earn enough profit to feed his family. [5]

Akmal Lewane was known for his unique style of expression and his witty humor. [5] He was an important part of Pashto literature and national movement. He was promoting book culture through his mobile stalls. [4] He was a symbol of humor and nationalism. [7]

Pashto literature refers to literature and poetry in Pashto language. The history of Pashto literature spreads over five thousands years having its roots in the oral tradition of Tappa. However, the first recorded period begins in 7th century with Amir Kror Suri. Later, Pir Roshan (1526–1574), who founded his own Sufi school of thoughts and began to preach his beliefs. He gave Pashto prose and poetry a new and powerful tone with a rich literary legacy. Khair-ul-Bayan, oft-quoted and bitterly criticized thesis, is most probably the first book on Sufism in Pashto literature. Among his disciples are some of the most distinguished poets, writers, scholars and sufis, like Arzani, Mukhlis, Mirza Khan Ansari, Daulat and Wasil, whose poetic works are well preserved. Akhund Darweza (1533–1615), a popular religious leader and scholar gave a powerful counterblast to Bayazid’s movement in the shape of Makhzanul Islam. He and his disciples have enriched the Pashto language and literature by writing several books of prose.

Najiba Faiz born 1 August 1988, is an Afghan-born Pakistani television host, television and film actress, known for playing variety of notable characters in films and in television mostly in Pakistan and Afghanistan. She began her career as a child artist, and later started in television serials such as Sang-e-Mar Mar and its second trilogy Sang-e-Mah. Faiz is currently hosting a morning show on Hum Pashto 1.

Sahib Shah Sabir was a renowned poet of the Pashto language in the modern era. He held a PhD degree in literature along with three master's degrees in Pashto literature, Urdu literature, and political science, all from the University of Peshawar.
