Al Ameer is a Lebanese restaurant with locations in Dearborn, Michigan and Dearborn Heights, Michigan. In 2016, Al Ameer won a James Beard Foundation Award, making it the first restaurant in the state of Michigan to earn the American Classic distinction. [1] Al Ameer was founded by Khalil Ammar and Zaki Hashem, who continue to operate the restaurant with several members of their families. [2]

In addition to serving middle eastern food to the public, Al Ameer is a cultural rallying point for members of the local Arab population. In 2022, Al Ameer hosted a lunch for United States Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Dearborn mayor Abdullah Hammoud, where they discussed concerns about racial profiling of Arab Americans over the previous 20 years. In 2004, Metro Detroit had one of the largest settlements of Middle Eastern people, including Arabs and Chaldo-Assyrians in the United States. As of 2007 about 300,000 people in Southeast Michigan traced their descent from the Middle East. Dearborn's sizeable Arab community consists largely of Lebanese people who immigrated for jobs in the auto industry in the 1920s, and of more recent Yemenis and Iraqis. In 2010 the four Metro Detroit counties had at least 200,000 people of Middle Eastern origin. Bobby Ghosh of TIME said that some estimates gave much larger numbers. From 1990 to 2000 the percentage of people speaking Arabic in the home increased by 106% in Wayne County, 99.5% in Macomb County, and 41% in Oakland County.

Kate Williams is a chef and restaurateur in Detroit, Michigan, US. She was chef and restaurateur for Lady of the House in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. In 2018 Food + Wine named her one of America's best new chefs and GQ and Esquire named the restaurant to their lists of best new restaurants. Lady of the House closed in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mei Lin is a Chinese-born American chef and television personality, best known as the winner of the twelfth season of the Bravo television network's reality television series, Top Chef. After winning Top Chef in 2014, Lin worked as a personal chef for Oprah Winfrey before going on to open her first restaurant, Nightshade in Los Angeles in 2019. She became engaged to her fiancé Andrew Skala on January 14, 2023. On April 9, 2023, Lin won the fourth season of Food Network's Tournament of Champions.
