Alan Jon Clark (born 22 September 1959) is a South African businessman. On 22 April 2013, he became the chief executive officer (CEO) of SABMiller, [1] a FTSE 100 multinational brewing and beverage company, and the world's second largest brewer. [2]

On October 10, 2016, SABMiller was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV so there was no longer a need for a management team for the former SABMiller. In August 2016, Anheuser Busch Inbev had announced that Mauricio Leyva, then the CEO of SAB South Africa, would be the only executive to remain with Anheuser Busch Inbev SA/NV leaving no role for Alan Clark. Early life

Clark was born on 22 September 1959 [1] in South Africa, [5] son of a tradesman and a clerical mother, he finished school in 1976. [6] From 1977 to 1981, he did his national service, working as a clerk in the South African prison service. [1]

Clark has a master's degree in clinical psychology from the University of Port Elizabeth and a doctorate in literature and philosophy from the University of South Africa. [7]

Career

After completing his doctorate, Clark was a practising clinical psychologist and psychology lecturer at South Africa's Vista University, [7] where he was an associate professor at the Centre for Cognitive Development. [8]

In order to join SABMiller in 1990, Clark was interviewed by Graham Mackay, who he succeeded 23 years later as CEO. [6] Clark remembers finding Mackay and the large panel intimidating, although he was drawn to their "very enquiring" minds. [6] He joined as a training and development manager. He was promoted successively to general manager at the Alrode brewery in Johannesburg, operations director and marketing director for SAB Ltd, before becoming CEO of SABMiller’s South African soft drinks operations. [8]

In 2003, Clark was promoted to managing director of their European operations. [9] He was in this role until July 2012, when he became chief operating officer (COO), and then in April 2013, CEO of SABMiller, the world's second largest brewer, [10] succeeding Graham Mackay. [7]

Interbrew Belgian Brewery

Interbrew was a large Belgian brewing company which owned many internationally known beers, as well as some smaller local beers. In 2004, Interbrew merged with Brazilian brewer AmBev to form InBev, which at the time became the largest brewer in the world by volume, with a 13% global market share. In 2008, InBev further merged with American brewer Anheuser-Busch to form Anheuser-Busch InBev. Interbrew is now a division of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV since the latter acquired SABMiller in October 2016.

SABMiller multinational brewing and beverage company

SABMiller plc was a multinational brewing and beverage company headquartered in Woking, England on the outskirts of London until 10 October 2016 when it was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Prior to that date, it was the world's second-largest brewer measured by revenues and was also a major bottler of Coca-Cola. Its brands included Fosters, Miller, and Pilsner Urquell. It operated in 80 countries worldwide and in 2009 sold around 21 billion litres of beverages. Since 10 October 2016, SABMiller has been a business division of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, a Brazilian-Belgian corporation with headquarters in Leuven.

Fosters Group

Foster's Group was an Australian beer group with interests in brewing and soft drinks. Foster's Group Limited was based in Melbourne, Victoria and was renamed Carlton & United Breweries prior to sale to British-South African multinational SABMiller in 2011. Foster's Group was the brewer of Foster's Lager. Foster's wine business was split into a separate company, Treasury Wine Estates, in May 2011.

Topvar Breweries is a beer brewing company in Slovakia. The company was created by the fusion of the Saris and Topvar breweries on 1 January 2007, after both were purchased by global brewing giant SABMiller in 2006.

Castle Brewery South African commercial brewery

Castle Brewery is one of the oldest commercial breweries in South Africa. As company-endorsed legend would have it, the company was founded by Charles Glass in Johannesburg in 1894. UCT history professor Anne Kelk Mager has argued that the official SAB story overemphasized the role of Charles and that it was his wife Lisa Glass who was primarily responsible for the creation of Castle. It later merged with other breweries to form South African Breweries, which still later merged with Miller of the United States to form SABMiller.

Carlton & United Breweries is an Australian brewing company. It is based in Abbotsford, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. In 1983 it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Elders IXL and CUB was delisted. In 1990, Elders IXL was renamed as Foster's Group, and in July 2004, CUB changed its name to Carlton & United Beverages. In February 2009, Foster's announced the decision to separate the Australian Wine division from the Australian Beer, Cider & Spirits (BCS) division, and rename BCS to Carlton & United Breweries.

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV is the largest beer company in the world. It had 200 brands prior to the merger with SABMiller on October 10, 2016. The combined ABInBev/SAB Miller entity has approximately 400 beer brands as of January 2017.

MillerCoors is a beer brewing company in the United States. In 2002 South African Breweries purchased Miller Brewing Company to create SABMiller. In 2005, Molson Brewery of Canada and Coors Brewing Company merged to form the Molson Coors Brewing Company. Then, in 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors created MillerCoors as a joint venture for their operations in the U.S. The company is the second-largest brewer in the U.S., after Anheuser-Busch.

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, commonly known as AB InBev, is a multinational drink and brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium. InBev is a brewing company that resulted from the merger between Belgium-based company Interbrew and Brazilian brewer AmBev which took place in 2004. It existed independently until the acquisition of Anheuser-Busch in 2008, which formed Anheuser-Busch InBev. InBev had operations in over 30 countries and sales in over 130 countries. Ernest Arthur Graham Mackay was a South African businessman, former Chief Executive and Chairman of SABMiller plc, a South African multinational brewing and beverage company registered on the London Stock Exchange, and the world's second-largest brewing company measured by revenues.
