Widely regarded as one of Australian football's finest centre half-backs, despite suffering numerous injuries, Knights was recognized for his contribution to the game when he was among the inaugural inductees into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and later in the Hawthorn Team of the Century.

Peake was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1990, was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
