An election for the leadership of the Alberta Liberal Party was held on September 10, 2011, [1] which was caused by David Swann's announcement on February 1, 2011, of is intention to resign as leader. The election is the party's second since the 2008 election. MLA Raj Sherman was elected on the first ballot. An open nomination system was used in which any Albertan could vote in the election, even if they were not party members. [2]

David Richard Swann, is a medical doctor and Canadian politician. He currently serves as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Calgary-Mountain View, and is a member of the Liberal Party. He was the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature from December 2008 until resigning as party leader in September 2011. He returned as interim leader of the Alberta Liberal Party on February 1, 2015, following the resignation of Raj Sherman and led the party through the 2015 provincial election.
Because of a Progressive Conservative leadership election, the PCs elected a new leader on October 1, 2011. The media were speculating that the new PC leader, who would become Premier, may call a snap election rather than wait until 2013. [3] This did not come to fruition, however, and Alison Redford stated that a general election would be held in the spring.

Sherman was elected leader of the Liberal Party on September 10, 2011, and led the party through the 2012 provincial election. He announced his immediate resignation on January 26, 2015, and that he will not be running for a third term as MLA in the next provincial election.
