Almeida's parents both worked for the government. She holds a doctorate in Law and has authored a thesis on the matrimonial property rights of women. [2] She co-founded Bailancho Saad (transl. Voice of Women), a women's collective organisation, and later Saad Aangan., a gender resource group. [3] She has also co-initiated several other citizens' formations such as Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony and SEZ Watch. She is also Visiting Senior Fellow at Impact and Policy Research Institute (IMPRI) [4] . She is a member of the Al-Zulaij Collective and of the Social Justice Action Committee-Goa. She has been a speaker at successive editions of the Goa Arts and Literature Festival. [5] She was also part of a panel at Difficult Dialogues 2018, speaking on the topic Empowerment within the Family: Women and the Law, [6] and is a member of the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development, which has a consultative status with UN ESCAP and is part of many networks including the Intercontinental Alliance for Women, Law and Development. She is the author of the book Tug and Tear: Dealing With Child Sexual Abuse. [7]
She has taught as a part time lecturer at Salgaonkar College of Law, and as a visiting faculty at MA (Women's Studies) Goa University, National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, Hyderabad, apart from lecturing on the family laws of Goa at leading institutions such as the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, National Law University Delhi. She has been a member of the Board of Studies in Women's Studies at Goa University and at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, and has an office in Taleigao, Goa. [8] She has written articles for Herald Goa, "Goa Today" The Wire [9] and DNA News ., [10] Frontline [11] and Indian Express [12] , and poems for Muse India [13] [14] . She was part of the drafting Committee constituted by the Government of Goa to review and revise the Family Laws of Goa [15] She was also part of the panel for the program of Zero Discrimination Day, organised by Human Touch Foundation at Instituto Nossa Senhora de Piedade, Panjim. Almeida co-founded Bailancho Saad in 1986. The organisation was responsible for putting gender on the agenda in Goa, and for getting the Dowry Prohibition Act extended to Goa and for unearthing a racket of selling abandoned infants in Goa. [17] [18]

Human rights in India is an issue complicated by the country's large size and population as well as its diverse culture, despite its status as the world's largest sovereign, secular, socialist democratic republic. The Constitution of India provides for fundamental rights, which include freedom of religion. Clauses also provide for freedom of speech, as well as separation of executive and judiciary and freedom of movement within the country and abroad. The country also has an independent judiciary as well as bodies to look into issues of human rights.

The term 'political participation' has a very wide meaning. It is not only related to 'Right to Vote', but simultaneously relates to participation in: decision-making process, political activism, political consciousness, etc. Women in India participate in voting, run for public offices and political parties at lower levels more than men. Political activism and voting are the strongest areas of women's political participation. To combat gender inequality in politics, the Indian Government has instituted reservations for seats in local governments.

In March 2021, after a decade-long tenure, she retired from the post of Professor and Regional Director of the Council for Social Development, Southern Regional Centre, a research institute recognised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research. She is amongst the founding faculty of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, and is a co-founder of the women's rights group, Asmita Resource Centre for Women, established in 1991 in Hyderabad. She was nominated as the Civil Society Advisory Governor for Asia by the Commonwealth Foundation, London in January 2020 for a term of three years. At present, Kannabiran is a Distinguished Professor at the Council for Social Development.

Sonal Shukla (1941–2021) was an Indian feminist, activist, teacher, writer, and social worker. She is known for her establishment of the Vacha Charitable Trust, a private organisation that founded a library for women scholars in Mumbai, India. She was a key member of the feminist protests regarding the Mathura Rape case, and a founding member of the Forum Against Oppression of Women, which successfully led a movement to reform India's laws against rape in the 1980s.
