Alberto Milian [3] (born November 12, 1960) is a Cuban-American soldier, lawyer and judge from Florida. He is a judge in the criminal division of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida.
He won the primary election on August 26, 2014, receiving 57.9 percent of the vote, and assumed office on January 6, 2015. He was re-elected in 2020; his term expires on January 5, 2027. [4]
Milian is the son of celebrated Cuban journalist Emilio Milian.
Milian earned his Bachelor of Arts in public administration from Florida International University in 1983 and his Juris Doctor from the Florida State University College of Law. [5]
Milian served in the U.S. Army as both an enlisted man and as a commissioned officer attaining the rank of captain. [6]
A graduate of Officer Candidate School, Milian also earned his parachutist wings at Fort Benning, Georgia. Originally commissioned as an Infantry officer he later transferred to military intelligence and completed the basic and advanced courses. He also completed the Strategic Interrogator and Counterintelligence courses.
Milian is a veteran of two conflicts: Operation Just Cause (Panama) and Operation Desert Shield/Storm (Persian Gulf War). In both conflicts he served under the command of legendary intelligence officer Colonel Stuart A. Herrington. [7]
His military decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal Saudi Arabia Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, as well as the Parachutist and M-16 Expert Qualification Badges.
Milian also received a Central Intelligence Agency Director's citation for exceptional service during a time of hostilities.
Marilyn Milian, known professionally as Judge Milian, is an American television personality, lecturer, retired Florida Circuit Court judge and court-show arbitrator. For 22 seasons from March 12, 2001 to July 21, 2023, Milian starred in the American courtroom television series The People's Court, replacing Jerry Sheindlin. Justice for the People with Judge Milian, another arbitration-based reality court show, premiered in the fall of 2023. The show follows suit of The People's Court in which she handles legal disputes.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Florida since January 6, 2015, as a result of a ruling in Brenner v. Scott from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida. The court ruled the state's same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional on August 21, 2014. The order was stayed temporarily. State attempts at extending the stay failed, with the U.S. Supreme Court denying further extension on December 19, 2014. In addition, a state court ruling in Pareto v. Ruvin allowed same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses in Miami-Dade County on the afternoon of January 5, 2015. In another state case challenging the state's denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples, a Monroe County court in Huntsman v. Heavilin stayed enforcement of its decision pending appeal and the stay expired on January 6, 2015.
