The Aldeburgh Open [1] and later known as the Aldeburgh Open Hard Courts [2] was a men's and women's international grass court tennis tournament founded in 1884 as the Aldeburgh Lawn Tennis Tournament. [3] The tournament was organised by the Aldeburgh LTC and first staged at the West Hill grounds, Aldeburgh-on-Sea, Suffolk, England. In 1924 the event switched to clay courts. The tournament ran annually until 1939 when it was discontinued because of World War II.

History

In 1884 the Aldeburgh Lawn Tennis tournament was established. [4] The tournament was held annually through till 1914 when it was discontinued due to World War I. Initially it was played on grass tennis courts, it resumed in 1920 and in 1923 the event switched to hard clay courts and was known as the Aldeburgh Open Hard Courts. [5] The event continued to be held through till 1938. In 1939 it was discontinued because of World War II.

The Suffolk Championships was an open international tennis tournament for both men and women held at Saxmundham, Suffolk, England founded in 1883 as the Saxmundham Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1893 it was elevated to a county-level event and renamed as the Suffolk County Championships. The championships ran until 1968 when it ceased to be part of ILTC worldwide tennis circuit.

In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.

The Leicester Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1878 as the Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was held at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. It ran until 1939 as an open international tennis event.

The Wolverhampton Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1897 as the Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was first held at the Severnside Lawn Tennis Club Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. The tournament was staged annually until 1959.

The Ashby-de-la-Zouch Open Championships and informally called the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Open was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first established in 1900. The championship was first held on courts at the Bath Grounds in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England. The tournament ran until 1926 when it was suddenly discontinued. It was revived in 1930 and continued till 1939 when it was finally abolished.

The Framlingham Open Lawn Tennis Tournament was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1883 and held at the Framlingham College, Framlingham, Suffolk, England until 1983. The event is still played today, but is no longer part of the senior worldwide tour.

The Alverstoke Open was an annual combined tennis tournament founded in 1909 as the Gosport Tournament at Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. The tournament was mainly played on grass courts except for the 1921 to 1923 editions which were played on clay courts. The tournament was part of the ILTF Circuit and ended in 1981.
