Arnold Alex Daoud (born May 19,1943 [1] ) is the former mayor of Miami Beach,Florida who served the City from 1985 to 1991. In 1991,Daoud was indicted for 41 counts of bribery. He was convicted and served seventeen months in a federal prison.
Alex Daoud was born and grew up in the City of Miami Beach. His grandparents were Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic immigrants from Lebanon. His mother,the youngest woman to pass the New York bar exam in the early 1920s,and his father,an antiques dealer,moved from New York to Florida during World War II. At the age of six,Daoud contracted polio;he was in a wheelchair for six months and later needed braces and crutches,but he eventually recovered without lifelong disability. [2]
Daoud,an attorney,was an associate in the law firm of Galbut Galbut and Menin,although he reportedly did little legal work for them,focusing on public service. [2] He served as a Miami City Attorney,then was elected to the Miami Beach City Commission in 1979. He was re-elected to a second term in 1981 and then a third term in 1983. In 1985,he became the first Roman Catholic to be elected Mayor of Miami Beach. In 1987,he won re-election by eighty-six percent of the popular vote. In 1989,he was re-elected to an unprecedented third term as Mayor of Miami Beach. [3] However,on October 29,1991,he was indicted on federal bribery charges. [4] He admitted to receiving bribes from developers in return for political influence and city council votes,as well as soliciting free work on his house from contractors seeking city business. He was convicted of bribery in 1992 and of other corruption crimes in 1993. He served 17 months in federal prison,followed by 3 years of probation. [2] He testified against many of the people who had paid him bribes. [5]
In 2007,he published Sins of South Beach:The True Story of Corruption,Violence,Murder and the Making of Miami Beach, [6] which "chronicles the sex,violence and corruption of his time in public office." [3] It is an autobiographical depiction of Miami Beach in the 1980s,a "retirement ghetto" plagued by rampant crime,and its regeneration into a premiere vacation and nightlife destination. He describes how crime was reduced by "attitude adjustment sessions," in which police would severely beat known criminals and then dump them in Miami across the causeway. [3]
Abscam,sometimes written ABSCAM,was a Federal Bureau of Investigation sting operation in the late 1970s and early 1980s that led to the convictions of seven members from both chambers of the United States Congress and others for bribery and corruption. The two-year investigation initially targeted trafficking in stolen property and corruption of prominent business people,but later evolved into a corruption investigation. The FBI was aided by the United States Department of Justice and convict Mel Weinberg in videotaping politicians accepting bribes from a fictitious Arabian company in return for various political favors.
William Jennings Jefferson is an American former politician from Louisiana whose career ended after his corruption scandal and conviction. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms from 1991 to 2009 as a member of the Democratic Party. He represented Louisiana's 2nd congressional district,which includes much of the greater New Orleans area. He was elected as the state's first black congressman since the end of Reconstruction.

Isaac "Ike" Sims Carothers is a former alderman of the 29th Ward on the far west side of the City of Chicago. He was first elected in 1999. He resigned in 2010 after pleading guilty to federal corruption charges.
William Craig Campbell is an American politician,who served as the 57th Mayor of Atlanta,Georgia from January 1994–January 2002. He was the third African-American mayor in the city's history. Accused of corruption during his time in office,he was convicted for tax evasion in 2006 and spent 16 months in federal prison.
Arthur E. "Art" Teele Jr. was an American lawyer and politician from the Republican Party. In the early 1980s,he served as the head of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration from 1981 to 1983. Born into a wealthy black family in Florida,Teele received an excellent education and became an officer in the US Army,and later had a successful career in private practice and politics. The Miami Herald published claims of legal wrongdoing against Teele during his fight to have a conviction against him overturned,after which he killed himself. Posthumously,his case was appealed and his conviction was overturned,exonerating him of all charges.
Angelo Joseph Errichetti was an American Democratic Party politician who served as Mayor of Camden,New Jersey,and in the New Jersey Senate before being indicted during Abscam.
Malcolm Anthony Smith is an American politician from New York who was convicted of public corruption. A Democrat,Smith was a member of the State Senate,representing the 10th district in the New York State Senate from 2000 to 2002 and Senate District 14 from 2003 to 2014. Smith served as New York State Senate Majority Leader in 2009 and served as Temporary President of the New York State Senate from 2009 to 2010;he is the first African-American to hold those leadership positions.
Ernest Page is a former member of the Orlando,Florida,City Council who served as Orlando's interim mayor in March and April 2005 while the elected mayor,Buddy Dyer,was facing charges of electoral fraud. After the charges against Dyer were dismissed in April 2005,Page returned to his City Council position. He was the first African-American to serve as mayor of Orlando. He was imprisoned for political corruption.
Samuel Rivera was an American politician,the Democratic mayor of the U.S. city of Passaic,New Jersey,from 2001 until 2008. Rivera came to national attention on September 6,2007,when he was indicted and arrested on charges of accepting bribes in exchange for agreeing to direct municipal contracts to an insurance broker acting as a cooperating witness. Rivera pleaded guilty to attempted extortion,stepped down as mayor,and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He was succeeded in office by Gary Schaer.

Laura Gibbs Maczka Jordan was the Mayor of Richardson,Texas from 2013 to 2015. Modern-day mayors are elected to two-year terms and are term-limited to no more than 3 terms,which can be consecutive or non-consecutive. The mayor and other members of the City Commission appoint a city manager to administer the day-to-day affairs and operations of City Hall and its various departments. City Hall is located at 1700 Convention Center Drive;the mayor's office is located on the fourth floor.
