Alex Tolgos is a Kenyan engineer and politician who served as the governor of Elgeyo Marakwet County. He was elected the first governor of the county on March 4,2013,and was again re-elected on August 8,2017,to serve for a second and final term as governor.
Tolgos was born on 6 May 1980 in Elgeyo-Marakwet,Kenya.
Tolgos attended St. Patrick's High School (Iten,Kenya).
He graduated from the University of Nairobi with B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering. [2]
The Tugen are a sub tribe of the Kalenjin people alongside the Nandi,Kipsigis,Keiyo,Pokot,Marakwet,Sabaot,Ogiek,Lembus and Sengwer sub-tribes. They occupy Baringo County and some parts of Nakuru County and Elgeyo Marakwet County in the former Rift Valley Province,Kenya. Daniel arap Moi,the second president of Kenya (1978–2002),came from the Tugen sub-tribe. The Tugen people speak the Tugen language. The Tugen population was 197,556 in 2019.
The Elgeyo are an ethnic group who are part of the larger Kalenjin ethnic group of Nilotic origin. They live near Eldoret,Kenya,in the highlands of the former Keiyo District,now part of the larger Elgeyo Marakwet County. The Elgeyo originally settled at the foothills of the Elgeyo escarpment,in the area between Kerio river to the east and the escarpment to the west. Due to drought and famine in the valley,the Keiyos climbed the escarpment and started to settle on the highland east of Uasin Gishu plateau. When the British came,the Keiyos were pushed to settle in clusters called reserves.
The Marakwet are one of the groups forming the ethnolinguistic Kalenjin community of Kenya,they speak the Markweta language. The Marakwet live in five territorial sections namely Almoo,Cherangany,Endoow,Sombirir (Borokot) and Markweta. Cutting across these territorial groups are a number of clans to which each Marakwet belongs. There were 119,969 Marakwet people in 2019.
Kapsowar is a Town in Elgeyo-Marakwet County,Kenya. Prior to March 2013,it was located in the former Rift Valley Province. In 1994,Kapsowar became the headquarters of the former Marakwet District. Prior to this,the Marakwet and Keiyo tribes were collectively grouped into the Elgeiyo-Markwet District. In 2010,the two districts were again merged into Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The Marakwet number approximately 200,000 and are a part of the Kalenjin family of tribes,which collectively are the second-largest ethnic group in Kenya.
Marakwet District is a defunct administrative district in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Kapsowar. The district had a population of 140.629. Local people are predominantly of the Marakwet tribe.
Keiyo District is a defunct administrative district in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The district was formed in 1994,when Elgeyo/Marakwet-District was split into two - the other half was Marakwet District. Keiyo District had a population of 143.865. Its capital was located in the Iten/Tambach town. In 2010,the districts were re-joined as Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Iten is a town in Elgeyo-Marakwet County in the Republic of Kenya. Iten serves as the capital and is the largest town in the county. The town is located along the road between Eldoret and Kabarnet at the junction of the road heading to Kapsowar. Elgeyo escarpment and Kerio River are located east of Iten. The town has a population of 42,312.
Kaptagat is a human settlement in Uasin Gishu County,in the southwestern part of Kenya. This part of the country,where the two counties of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet County share a border,is used by the majority of Kenyan professional long-distance runners to train for professional competition. Eliud Kipchoge,the marathon world record holder,who also doubles as the Tokyo Olympics and Rio Olympics marathon gold medalist,maintains a training camp in Kaptagat.
Marakwet East is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of four constituencies of Elgeyo-Marakwet County. Between 1992 and 2012,the constituency had eleven wards,all of which elected councillors for the defunct Marakwet County Council. However,after the promulgation of the new constitution,the constituency was subdivided into four wards:Embobut/Embolot,Endo,Kapyego,and Sambirir.

The constituency has 15 wards,all of which elect councillors for the Keiyo County Council. The constituency was established for the 1969 elections. Embobut is one of the administrative wards for the Marakwet East Constituency in Elgeyo-Marakwet County,Kenya. The area contains one of two major drainage basins for Elgeyo-Marakwet County,referred to locally as a "water towers". The other water tower in Elgeyo-Marakwet County is Cherangani Hills. Embobut supplies Eldoret town and its environs with water. Collectively the Embobut and Cherangani Hills water towers also supply water to the Kerio River,which flows through the Cheploch Gorge in Baringo to Lake Turkana via the Turkwel Gorge.
Local elections were held in Elgeyo-Marakwet County to elect a Governor and County Assembly on 4 March 2013. Under the new constitution,which was passed in a 2010 referendum,the 2013 general elections were the first in which Governors and members of the County Assemblies for the newly created counties were elected.
Elgeyo-Marakwet County is one of Kenya's 47 counties. Elgeyo Marakwet County is located in the former Rift Valley Province. Its capital and largest town is Iten. It borders the counties of West Pokot to the north,Baringo County to the east,southeast and south,Uasin Gishu to the southwest and west,and Trans Nzoia to the northwest.

Other flags adopted in the year after the first county governments were elected which was between 4 March 2013 to the same date on 2014. The Rimoi National Reserve is an animal conservation reserve that is located in the Elgeyo Marakwet County in Kenya. It is a relatively small reserve,covering 66 km2,and is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service. It lies adjacent to Lake Kamnarock which has recently dried up and is part of a conservation area that is five larger than its size.
Pokot South Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of the four constituencies in West Pokot County. The constituency was established for the 2013 General Elections. The Current Member of Parliament for Pokot South Constituency is Hon. David Pkosing Losiakou who was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket. The Pokot South Constituency borders Sigor Constituency to the East,Kapenguria Constituency to the North and West,and Elgeyo-Marakwet County to the South.
Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen is a Kenyan lawyer and Senator for Elgeyo-Marakwet County. He was elected Senator for Elgeyo-Marakwet County in 2013 on a URP ticket,winning against the late Nicholas Biwott among other veteran politicians. He was easily re-elected in 2017 on a Jubilee ticket,beating former Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.
His Excellency Wisley Kipyegon Rotich is the second Governor of County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet. Governor Previously served as the second Deputy Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet County from August 21st 2017 upto 25th August 2022 when he took oath of office to serve as Governor. He hails from Emsoo Ward,Keiyo North Sub-County and is married with several Children.
