Alexander Alden is an American national security official and business executive with expertise in U.S. foreign policy, defense strategy, and emerging technologies. He has held senior roles in the U.S. Department of State, National Security Council, and Department of Defense focusing on defense policy, transatlantic relations, and technological innovation.
Alden is a senior counselor at Palantir Technologies where he focuses on expanding collaboration with allied and partner governments. His business development activities are focused on defense and security partnerships across Europe. He also serves as a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Strategy Initiative. [1]
At the U.S. Department of State, Alden served as the acting Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations where he was responsible for anticipating, preventing, and responding to conflict that undermines U.S. national interests. [2] As Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs he was the senior official responsible for strengthening US-EU relations and for countering Chinese regional influence. [3] In this role he spearheaded the first high-level US-EU Dialogue on China. [4] Alden was transferred to the Department of State after having worked at the U.S. National Security Council as senior director for emerging technologies and as director for defense policy. [5] He also served as special assistant for policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. [6]
Outside of government service, Alden was the national security editor for American Affairs, Lincoln Fellow at the Claremont Institute, and project director at the Center for Naval Analyses. [7] [8] In private consulting, he provided advice to government and corporate clients as managing director of the Rimland Strategies Group and manager of analysis at the Avascent Group. [9]
Alden earned a M.A. in political science from the Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in political science and philosophy from Southern Illinois University.

Based in the White House, it is part of the Executive Office of the President of the United States, and composed of senior national security advisors and Cabinet officials.
Joseph Samuel Nye Jr. is an American political scientist. Robert G. Joseph is a senior scholar at the National Institute for Public Policy. He was the United States Special Envoy for Nuclear Nonproliferation, with ambassadorial rank. Prior to this post, Joseph was the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, a position he held until January 24, 2007. Joseph is known for being instrumental in creating the Proliferation Security Initiative and as the architect of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism. He was also the US chief negotiator to Libya in 2003 who convinced the Libyans to give up their WMD programs. He also recently authored a book describing his experience in negotiating with Libya entitled "Countering WMD."
The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) is a headquarters-level staff of the United States Department of Defense. Schake is a member of the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee.
In the United States, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs or ASD (ISA) is the principal advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD (P)) and the United States Secretary of Defense on international security strategy and policy on issues of Department of Defense (DoD) interest related to the governments and defense establishments of the nations and international organizations of Europe (including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the Middle East, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere. The ASD (ISA) also oversees security cooperation programs and foreign military sales programs in these regions.
