Alexander Mark Heming Gilkes (born July 1979) [1] is a British businessman. [4] He is the co-founder of venture studio Squared Circles, which launched in 2020. He was previously the co-founder and president of online auction house Paddle8 from 2011 to 2018, when it was sold to The Native. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Early life

Gilkes is the son of Jeremy Gilkes, a dermatologist, and was born and raised in London. [9] [10] He was educated at Eton College and at the University of Bristol. [9]

Career

Gilkes has been based in New York since 2008. [9] He served as an auctioneer at Phillips de Pury & Company and worked at LVMH. Gilkes presided as an auctioneer for auctions including Madonna's Raising Malawi, [11] Elton John AIDS Foundation, [12] and amFAR. [13]

In 2011, he founded Paddle8, an online auction website selling fine art, photography, street art and collectibles. In 2013, the company did $US20 million in sales. [14] By 2015, the company reported "$US140 million" in sales. [15] Paddle8 was sold in 2015 to The Native. [16] [17] Gilkes stepped down from his role at Paddle8 in 2018.

In 2020, Gilkes co-founded venture studio Squared Circles along with Lukas Derksen and Paddle8 co-founder Osman Khan. [18]

Gilkes "has been named" as one of Fast Company's Most Creative Entrepreneurs in 2017, [19] the 100 Most Powerful People in the Art World (Art + Auction) in 2014, 2015 and 2016, a Digital Maverick ( DETAILS ), one of the 40 Most Important People Under 40 ( Apollo ) and appeared on Vanity Fair and GQ's best-dressed lists. [20] He serves on the board of the New York Academy of Art. [21]

Personal life

Gilkes married British-Bahraini fashion designer Misha Nonoo in Venice, Italy in May 2012 and the pair lived in New York City. [22] Their divorce was finalized in the summer of 2017. [23]

Since 2018, Gilkes has been in a relationship with Russian former tennis player Maria Sharapova. [2] They announced their engagement on 17 December 2020. [3] Their son was born on 1 July 2022. [24]

Slave Labour is a mural that was painted by a British graffiti artist, Banksy, on the side wall of a Poundland store in Wood Green, London in May 2012. The artwork is 48 inches (122 cm) high by 60 inches (152 cm) wide, and depicts an urchin child at a sewing machine assembling a bunting of Union Jack patches. The work was a protest against the use of sweatshops to manufacture Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics memorabilia in 2012.

Paddle8 was an online auction house based in New York City selling fine art including Post-War and Contemporary art, prints & multiples, photography, street art and collectibles. Paddle8's sales focus on pieces priced between $1,000 and $100,000, all vetted by specialists for authenticity. Paddle8 had offices in New York, Los Angeles, London and Hong Kong. In 2016, Paddle8 merged with the Berlin online auction house Auctionata. In February 2017, Auctionata declared insolvency and Paddle8 became an independent company once again, before selling to Native in 2018, and then to Facebank AG in 2019. In March 2020, Paddle8 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York just one week after the non-profit New American Cinema Group filed a lawsuit against the company for allegedly misappropriating funds from a charity auction.

Aditya Julka is the co-founder and former CEO of Paddle8, an online auction house for fine art and collectibles. In July 2016, Paddle8 announced a merger with Auctionata, with Julka serving as the chief strategy officer for the joint company. Julka previously founded InBioPro and BioAtlantis.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Auctionata</span> Defunct online luxury auction company

Auctionata was an online auction house and eCommerce company specializing in luxury goods, art, antiques and collectibles based in Berlin with offices in New York. Auctionata had a team of 250 art experts who worked on commission and were not directly employed by Auctionata. These experts were paid by the minute via PayPal for valuing, authenticating, and curating objects including art, cars, watches, antiques. Since opening in February 2012, Auctionata had evaluated and verified over 21,000 pieces of art. Notably, Auctionata's experts discovered a watercolor by Egon Schiele, which was valued at a starting price of $1.3 million. Auctionata was declared insolvent on February 29, 2017 by announcing it had ceased operations.

Untitled is a painting created by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1982. The artwork, which depicts a skull, is among the most expensive paintings ever. In May 2017, it sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby's, the highest price ever paid at auction for artwork by an American artist in a public sale. That record was surpassed by Shot Marilyns by Andy Warhol, which sold for $195 million in May 2022.
