He was educated at the University of East Anglia (BSc). [1] He has served as Group President of the TJX Companies, Inc. He was instrumental in the development of the TK Maxx stores in Great Britain and ran its international operations. He was also a director of Papa John's. He was President and CEO of Pier 1 Imports from February 2007 to December 2016.

It was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker PIR. In January 2020, Pier 1 had over 1,000 physical stores throughout the United States and Canada. Pier 1 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 17, 2020, and on May 19, 2020, announced it was asking the bankruptcy court to close all stores, due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is credited with saving Pier 1 Imports from its sales slump in the 1990s. Under Girouard's stewardship, Pier 1 Imports' sales reached $1 billion in the fiscal year 1999.

He is currently the CEO of Cleveland Avenue, an investment group and accelerator that focuses on building new food, beverage, and restaurant concepts, which he founded in 2015. Cleveland Avenue has invested in Beyond Meat and Taste 222, among other food industry companies, and Thompson has served as a member of the board of directors at Beyond Meat since October 2015.
