Alexandre Manuel Fortes Alhinho (born 7 December 1953) is a Cape Verdean retired footballer who played as a defender and was a manager of regional clubs and the national team between 2003 [1] and 2006.

He was the brother of the Portuguese international player and manager Carlos Alhinho.

Biography

Alexandre Alhinho was born on the island of Sãp Vicente. Shortly after he immigrated to Portugal where he played his youth years for a season with Académica de Coimbra, he played as a defender. He started his pro career in 1973 with SC Farense for a season. His second club was FC Porto in the following season who finished as second in the Portuguese Championships.

He returned to Académica Coimbra in the following season in 1975 and this time in the professional club and played 55 matches for two seasons. [2] In 1977, he spent five seasons with Os Belenenses and played 98 matches. He returned to Farense in 1982 where the club was playing in the Second Division. The club finished first in the south group, then the club won the silver title with a club of the north group. [3] He played in the Premier Division and the club finished 2nd in the 1983/84 season, he scored the only goal of his career. [2] He played inside the Second Division and with Lusitano Évora for a season in 1984 and then GD Estoril, a club based in Praia in the Azores. For the next three season, he would play for his last club based in northcentral Portugal, Académico de Viseu also in the Second Division, the club finished second behind FC Famalicão and again played inside the Premier Division and played 22 matches there. He retired from playing football (soccer) and headed back to Cape Verde, no long after, he coached Académica do Mindelo where he helped win their only national title. Later, he coached Batuque FC. On 26 September 2012 he became coach of Académica do Mindelo once more. [4]

It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. It is the second team of the regional league who won the most titles after independence especially in the 1960s and the 1970s. Its current president is Carlos Alberto Lopes and its coach is Yoya who became in May 2017. The club name is the Dragons or Dragões, the same as Porto's slogan. Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Associação Académica do Mindelo is a football club that had played in the Premier division and the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente and plays in a stadium with a capacity of 5,000. The club is an affiliate of the Portuguese club Académica de Coimbra. It is one of the first teams ever to win a provincial title before independence, in 1953, a year later. There was no further competition until 1956. Académica won their first title since independence in 1989. Other titles includes four for the island including their recent 2006/07 season win and two opening tournaments along with their recent win.

José Rui de Pina Aguiar, known as José Rui, is a Cape Verdean retired footballer who played as a central defender, and is the current assistant coach of the Cape Verde national team.

Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena is a multi-use stadium in Mindelo, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Derby as well as CS Mindelense, Académica, GD Amarantes and Batuque FC and the lesser club of Corinthians São Vicente. The stadium holds 5,000 people and area is 105x68 m and its ground is artificial grass. The stadium is owned by the municipality of São Vicente and is operated by the São Vicente Regional Football Association (ARFSV). The Cape Verdean Football Championship or the Campeonato Caboverdiano de Futebol is a football competition that was created in 1976 in Cape Verde. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire.

The São Vicente Island or Regional Premier Division is a regional championship played in São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. The championship is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. In 1989, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017, a second place club participated in the national championships, Académica do Mindelo in 1989, Mindelense in 2014 and FC Derby in 2015 and in 2016 and will be for 2017. The 7th place club plays with a Second Division runner-up in a division decisional match to decide on promoting or remain in the Second Division. The last placed club relegated into the São Vicente Second Division. Up to around 2010, only a club was relegated into that division.

Ramilton Jorge Santos do Rosário, known as Rambé, is a Cape Verdean professional footballer who plays for Académica do Mindelo as a striker.

The 2008 Cape Verdean Football Championships season was the 29th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 10 May and finished on 16 August, later than the last season. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting would win their 7th title and third straight after defeating Académica do Mindelo in penalty kicks. Sporting gained entry into the 2009 CAF Champions League, it is the last club to enter to date. No second place club would participate in the 2009 CAF Confederation Cup.

The 2016 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 37th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 14 May and finished on 9 July, it started five days later than last season and finished two days earlier, the season was a week shorter than last. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The scheduling was completed on November 16 and the group system was kept instead of becoming a one portion season without playoffs and was the last time. CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed. Mindelense qualified and participated in the 2017 National Championships.

The island of São Vicente in Cape Verde in the westcentral portion of the Barlavento Islands is home to several teams and clubs. The major professional clubs are CS Mindelense, FC Derby, Académica do Mindelo, Batuque FC and Amarante. The island also has a league named the São Vicente Island League, it is the oldest in Cape Verde, first it only had football, later it had basketball, volleyball, athletics and now futsal.
