World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA, is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. It is one of several international federations which administer a given sport or discipline for both the IOC and the international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 2019 World Aquatics Championships were the 18th FINA World Aquatics Championships, held in Gwangju, South Korea from 12 to 28 July 2019. The city had previously hosted the 2015 Summer Universiade aquatics events in the same venues.
The 2023 World Aquatics Championships, the 20th edition of the World Aquatics Championships, were held in Fukuoka, Japan, from 14 to 30 July 2023. Originally scheduled to be held in 2021, the championships were postponed until May 2022 in response to the rescheduling of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was pushed back a second time to 2023 due to ongoing travel restrictions and safety measures in place in Japan. In its place, Budapest hosted the 19th Championships from 18 June to 3 July 2022.

Mallory Comerford is an American competitive swimmer specializing in freestyle events. Comerford was the winner of five gold medals at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. She won USA Swimming's Golden Goggle Award for Breakout Performer of the Year for 2017. The following year, Comerford won eight medals in individual and relay events at the 2018 World Swimming Championships.

Holly Hibbott is a British swimmer. She competed in the women's 400 metre freestyle event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she won silver in the 400 metre freestyle and bronze in the 4×200 m freestyle relay events.
Simona Quadarella is an Italian swimmer. She specializes in long distance freestyle events. In 2019, she represented Algeria at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships held in Gwangju, South Korea. She competed in the women's 800 metre freestyle and women's 1500 metre freestyle events. In both events she did not advance to compete in the final.
During the FINA World Aquatics Championships, athletes whose governing body have been suspended are still allowed to compete under the FINA flag with the "country" designation as "Suspended Member Federation". In 2015 the Sri Lankan federation was suspended, but they competed as independent athletes under the FINA code. Since 2017 Kuwait and Kenya have sent participants to the Aquatics Championships under the SMF code.
Independent athletes have competed at the FINA World Aquatics Championships since 2015, either due to suspension of their governing body or as refugees.
