The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Under-17 Championship is a once-off special hurling championship for male players under the age of 17. Organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the championship will be awarded for the first and only time in 2017.

Hurling outdoor team game

Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic and Irish origin. It is administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The game has prehistoric origins, and has been played for 4,000 years. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players, and much terminology. There is a similar game for women called camogie. It shares a common Gaelic root with the sport of shinty, which is played predominantly in Scotland.

Qualification

The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Under-17 Championship features four teams in the final tournament. Many more teams contest the two provincial under-17 championships with the two respective champions, Antrim and Galway automatically qualifying for the All-Ireland Championship.

History

The All-Ireland Under-17 Hurling Championship began in 2017. It was the sixth All-Ireland championship to be created after the senior, intermediate, junior, under-21 and minor grades. The championship was created as a result of the minor championship changing its age category from under-18 to under-17, with the aim of providing players born after 1 January 2000 the chance to represent their county at underage level. All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship

The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887.

The GAA Hurling Intermediate All-Ireland Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Effectively contested by the second string teams of the top inter-county hurling sides in Ireland, the tournament has taken place every year since 1997—having originally been run between 1961 and 1973.

The All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship was a hurling competition organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland. The competition was originally contested by the second teams of the strong counties, and the first teams of the weaker counties. In the years from 1961 to 1973 and from 1997 until now, the strong counties have competed for the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship instead. The competition was then restricted to the weaker counties. The competition was discontinued after 2004 as these counties now compete for the Nicky Rackard Cup instead. From 1974 to 1982, the original format of the competition was abandoned, and the competition was incorporated in Division 3 of the National Hurling League. The original format, including the strong hurling counties was re-introduced in 1983.

Format

The All-Ireland Championship is a knockout tournament, however, there is a certain element of seeding. The Munster and Leinster champions are put on opposite sides of the draw in separate semi-finals. The Antrim and Galway teams are also put on opposite sides of the draw in separate semi-finals. Unlike the minor championship, the Munster and Leinster runners-up are not allowed to contest the All-Ireland series.

The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 GAA county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway inter-county teams.

The championship was contested as the Leinster Under-21 Championship between 1964 and 2018 before changing to an under-20 age category from 2019. It is sponsored by Bord Gáis Energy.
