The Allegheny County Police Department is a law enforcement agency in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The department provides law enforcement services on County property, including the Pittsburgh International Airport, the Allegheny County Airport, and various parks. Between 2017 and 2021, the ACPD was contracted by the borough of Wilmerding. It also provides assistance to all municipal law enforcement agencies in the County, and generally investigates all serious crimes, such as homicide, except in the City of Pittsburgh.

History

The Allegheny County Police Department was established in 1932 by an act of the Allegheny County Board of Commissioners and the Pennsylvania Legislature.

Organization

The executive of the Allegheny County Police Department is the Superintendent, who is appointed by the County Executive, and assisted by two Assistant Superintendents. [1] The current Superintendent is Coleman McDonough, since June 2016. [2] [3] The department is in turn divided into two Divisions, each commanded by an Assistant Superintendent.

Uniformed Division

The Uniformed Division is primarily responsible for patrol of the Pittsburgh International Airport, Allegheny County Airport, nine county parks and several other county facilities and buildings.

Detective Division

The Detective Division is primarily responsible for investigation of crimes which occur on county property, and all serious crimes which occur within municipalities.

Contract services

Between 2017 and 2021, the department provided law enforcement services to the borough of Wilmerding. [5] [6] [7]

Chelsa L. Wagner is an American politician currently serving as a Judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. She previously served as the Allegheny County Controller. She resigned her position at the beginning of 2022, prior to being sworn in as judge. She also served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 22nd District which, at the time, included the South Side and part of the North Side of the city of Pittsburgh, and parts of the suburbs of Baldwin, Whitehall and Castle Shannon. She resigned from the House in late 2011 after being elected controller, which she served almost 3 terms, until she was elected Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge in Nov 2021, and assumed the position on Jan 3, 2022.

The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office is a law enforcement agency that serves Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and is the largest sheriff's office in the state. Bruce Beemer is an American attorney and jurist serving as a judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. He served as the 49th Pennsylvania Attorney General from 2016 to 2017 and as Inspector General of Pennsylvania from 2016 to 2019. He was nominated to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas by Governor Tom Wolf and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate in November 2019. He was sworn in on January 3, 2020.
