Because the claw develops from germinal tissue within the third phalanx, amputation of the bone is necessary to fully remove the claw. The terms onychectomy and declawing imply mere claw removal, but a more appropriate description would be phalangectomy, excision of toe bone.

Oakley, the daughter of Steve and Georgia Plantinga of Schererville, IN, is a 1987 graduate of Munster (IN) High School. She studied Zoology at the University of Michigan, getting her degree in 1991. She then attended the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada and interned at the Calgary Zoo. In 2023, the show entered its 11th season.
