J. Mohamed Shanavas (born 22 April 1982),known as Aloor Sha Navas,is an Indian politician,writer,and social worker from Tamil Nadu. [1] [2] He is currently the Deputy Secretary General of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.[ when? ] Since 2021,he is an elected member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly representing the Nagapattinam constituency. Shanavas was born into a middle-class family in Aloor near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District. His parents are Jainul Abideen and Raabiyath Beevi. He is married to Parveen. They have a son together. [5]
In 2016,Shanavas stood for his first Tamil Nadu state legislative assembly elections from the Kunnam constituency. He was the joint candidate of the People's Welfare Front Alliance. He garnered just 19,853 votes and lost the elections to R. T. Ramachandran (politician) by a huge margin[ citation needed ].
In 2021,he stood for elections from the Nagapattinam Assembly constituency as the candidate for Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). He defeated his nearest AIADMK rival with an individual 'pot' symbol as a part of the DMK-led alliance. [6] [7]
Currently,he also serves as the Deputy General Secretary of VCK party,a Dravidian political party for all caste equality. He is a strong follower of Thanthai Periyar,Muhammad Ismail and B.R.Ambedkar. [8]
Shanavas has written six books and directed three documentaries to highlight the issues in the country. [9]
Shanavas received death threats from a BJP worker who said in social media that a news of Shanavas will come soon as a prize for victory of the BJP in 4 seats in the state. The BJP worker was later arrested by the police. [10] [11]

The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties:DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. However,these were heavily overshadowed by other major issues such as incessant power cuts in households and industries,excessive sand mining,increasing prices of essential items,2G spectrum case and undue influence of Karunanidhi's extended family in various aspects of Tamil politics and business and even media.

The 1997 Melavalavu massacre refers to the murder of a Panchayat President of the village and six other men of the Dalit community by dominant caste members in Melavalavu,Madurai on 30 June 1997. The men were hacked to death after some dominant caste members refused to accept a Panchayat president from the Dalit Community.
The 2019 Ponparappi violence happened on April 18,2019,during the polling day for the 2019 Indian general election in the village of Ponparappi,Tamil Nadu. The violence reportedly started as scuffles and agitations between the supporters of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the members of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) together with the members of Hindu Munnani,which reportedly led to violence by the members of the PMK on a Dalit colony. 60 to115 Dalit houses were damaged and Dalits were assaulted.
