Amadou Mbow is a Senegalese actor. [1] He is best known for the role as 'Issa' in the supernatural romantic drama film Atlantics . [2] Apart from being an actor, he is also a graphic designer and photography enthusiast.
Mbow was born and grew up in Dakar. [3]
The son of a Senegalese jeweler of Fulani origin from Futa, Amadou Mbow is the eldest son of his mother and the brother of three sisters. [4] During his teenage years, basketball occupied an important place in his life. After several years of practice at DUC (Dakar University Club) which allowed him to increase his awareness, his reactivity as well as his determination. He finally decides to quit sport to take a more interest in the audiovisual world by training himself as a self-taught person. [5]
In 2019, Mbow was selected for the film Atlantics directed by Mati Diop as her first feature film. [6] In the film, he played a young policeman 'Issa' who is sent to investigate a mysterious fire that burns through Ada's nuptial bed on her wedding night. [3]
The film had its premier in the capital of Dakar before its release in Senegal. The film had mainly positive reviews from critics and screened at several film festivals. The film later won the Grand Prix Award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. [7]
In 2020, Amadou Mbow was selected for the Césars 2020 in the “Revelations” categories. [8]

Penda Mbow, born in 1955, is a historian, an activist, and a Senegalese politician. Minister of Culture of Senegal for several months in 2001, she is a professor at Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar and president of Mouvement citoyen.
Issa Laye Thiaw was a Senegalese historian, theologian and author on Serer religion, Serer tradition and history. Born into a Serer family, himself the son of a Serer High Priest (Saltigue), Thiaw is a specialist in the Serer religion. He was a former researcher at the Centre d’études des civilisations (CEC) de Dakar.
The Alliance for the Republic–Yakaar is a political party in Senegal. Diop made history when the film premiered at Cannes, becoming the first Black woman to direct a film featured in competition at the festival.
Mati Diop is a French-Senegalese filmmaker and actress who starred in the 2008 film 35 Shots of Rum. She also directed the 2019 film Atlantics, for which she became the first biracial female director to be in contention for the Cannes Film Festival's highest prize, the Palme d'Or. At Cannes, Atlantics won the Grand Prix. She also won awards for her short film, Mille Soleils (2013) and Snow Canon (2011).

His research, at the University of Pau in south-west France, focuses on representations of Africa in 18th-century accounts and images by travellers. Diop received the 2021 International Booker Prize for his novel At Night All Blood Is Black as the first French author. The novel was also shortlisted for ten French awards and won them in other countries.
Atlantiques is a 2009 Franco-Senegalese documentary short film directed by Mati Diop and co-produced by Corinne Castel and Frederic Papon. The film starring Alpha Diop, Cheikh M'Baye, Ouli Seck and Serigne Seck. The film deals with the odyssey of three Senegalese friends attempting a life-threatening boat crossing, which is a form of illegal migration.
