Amanda Varela was an Argentine actress who primarily worked during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema, performing on stage and in films of Argentina and the US. She made 9 films in Argentina and 2 in the US and appeared on stage in numerous productions in both countries. Varela is usually credited with helping her sister, Mecha Ortiz, secure her first acting roles. In the 1950s, Varela retired from acting, moved to the United States, and became a matrimonial judge.
Amanda Varela Domínguez was born on 24 October 1911 [1] in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was the younger sister of Mecha Ortiz, [2] yet had already made a name for herself when Ortiz embarked on an acting career. Varela helped Ortiz secure a screen test with Paramount Studios of France and introduced her to a friend, film critic Chas de Cruz, who helped Ortiz secure a her first film role as "Rubia Mireya", in the classic Los muchachos de antes no usaban gomina directed by Manuel Romero. [3]
By 1930, Varela had acted in her first role on film, La canción del gaucho , which was produced by Chas de Cruz [4] under the direction of José A. Ferreyra and starring María Turgenova and Arturo Forte, among others. [5] On stage in 1934, Varela was performing in Baile en el Savoy with Florencio Parravicini but had to withdraw due to illness and was replaced by Amelia Bence. [6] She came back to the stage in 1935 to star in a controversial role in Romeo y Julieta [7] and later that same year had better success in the role of Pepita Giménez in the musical comedy La payariega with Pedro Quartucci, Miguel Faust Rocha, Eleonora Boemer, and Dora Martínez at the Teatro Avenida. [8] She made several films in the late 1930s, including Melgarejo (1937), ¡Segundos afuera! (1937), La chismosa (1938), and Papá soltero (1939), [9] which earned her sufficient reputation that an invitation to Hollywood was issued. [10] In 1939, her first US film was made, El otro soy yo , under the direction of Richard Harlan and starring Tito Guízar, Renee Torres, Pilar Arcos, and Martin Garralaga. [11]
She was hired by Luis G. Basurto who was directing a company of actors called "Teatro Popular de México" that were working at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles. Varela also participated in several plays in the United States, including: Tovarich directed by Mark Ranhar, El escándalo de la verdad, Miércoles de cenizas, and Cada quien su vida.[ citation needed ] By 1942, she was performing as a singer [12] and also had secured a role in the US film, The Falcon's Brother , for which she drew good reviews. [13] She returned to Argentina and appeared in the film Mi novia es un fantasma (1944 ). [9] The following year, she performed at the Teatro Nacional Cervantes in the debut of Tierra extraña, [2] by Roberto Alejandro Vagni, which would later be made into a film of the same name. [14] Varela starred in the 1946 film, La tía de Carlos , along with Pedro Quartucci, Rodolfo Francisco Alvarez, and Pedro Maratea. [15] In the 1947 stage production of Luna de miel para tres, Varela starred with Mexican actors Gloria Marín and Jorge Negrete. [16] She made her last film, El diablo de las vidalas , in 1950. [9]
Varela moved to the states, retired from performing, and became a judge, specifically working in marriages. [2] She died on 1 July 1, 2000 in Los Angeles, California. [1]

Amelia Bence was an Argentine film actress and one of the divas of the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema (1940–1960).
Mecha Ortiz was a classic Argentine actress who appeared in films between 1937 and 1981, during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema. At the 1944 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards, Ortiz won the Silver Condor Award for Best Actress for her performance in Safo, historia de una pasión (1943), and won it again in 1946 for her performance in El canto del cisne (1945). She was known as the Argentine Greta Garbo and for playing mysterious characters, who suffered by past misfortunes in love, mental disorders, or forbidden love. Safo, historia de una pasión was the first erotic Argentine film, though there was no nudity. She also played in the first film in which a woman struck a man and the first film with a lesbian romance. In 1981, she was awarded the Grand Prize for actresses from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Delia Amadora García Gerboles better known as Delia Garcés was an Argentine film actress of the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema (1940–1960). She made almost 30 appearances in film between 1937 and 1959 and acted on stage from 1936 to 1966. She won the Premios Sur Best Actress award three times from the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences, as well as the Argentine Film Critics Association's Silver Condor Award for Best Actress, the Premios Leopold Torre Nilsson, Premio Pablo Podestá, and the inaugural ACE Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asociación de Cronistas del Espectáculo.
Laura Ana "Tita" Merello was an Argentine film actress, tango dancer and singer of the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema (1940–1960). In her six decades in Argentine entertainment, at the time of her death, she had filmed over thirty movies, premiered twenty plays, had nine television appearances, completed three radio series and had had countless appearances in print media. She was one of the singers who emerged in the 1920s along with Azucena Maizani, Libertad Lamarque, Ada Falcón, and Rosita Quiroga, who created the female voices of tango. She was primarily remembered for the songs "Se dice de mí" and "La milonga y yo".
The Gaucho War is a 1942 Argentine historical drama and epic film directed by Lucas Demare and starring Enrique Muiño, Francisco Petrone, Ángel Magaña, and Amelia Bence. The film's script, written by Homero Manzi and Ulyses Petit de Murat, is based on the novel by Leopoldo Lugones published in 1905. The film premiered in Buenos Aires on November 20, 1942 and is considered by critics of Argentine cinema to be one of the most successful films in history. It won three Silver Condor awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, given by the Argentine Film Critics Association at the 1943 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards for the best films and performances of the previous year.
Las furias is a 1960 Argentine drama film directed by Vlasta Lah, based on the 1950 play of the same name by Enrique Suárez de Deza. The first Argentine sound film directed by a woman, it was the directorial debut for Lah, who became the only woman film director in 1960s Latin America. Safo, historia de una pasión is a 1943 Argentine erotic melodrama film directed by Carlos Hugo Christensen and starring Mecha Ortiz and Roberto Escalada. The film is based on the 1884 Alphonse Daudet novel Sappho. At the 1944 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards, Ortiz won the Silver Condor Award for Best Actress for her performance as Selva in the film.
Paulette Christian was a French-Argentine vedette, singer and actress of film, theater and television who had a long career in Argentina. Christian had been a member of the anti-Nazi resistance during World War II. She spent seven years in the US. She made her acting career during Argentina's golden age of film and television. She appeared with José Cibrian, Osvaldo Miranda, Angel Magaña, Zulma Faiad, Jorge Larrea, Susana Campos, Amelia Bence, among others. She debuted on television in 1955. She was a pioneer in the French bataclanas style in Argentina, along with May Avril and Xénia Monty. She committed suicide in 1967.

Paulina Singerman Begun was an Argentine actress and businesswoman who primarily worked during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema, performing on both stage and in films. In the later part of her career, she spent a decade performing for television. She was the younger sister of actress Berta Singerman. In 1981, she was awarded both a Diploma of Merit and a Platinum Konex for her comedy work in film and theatre.
Florencio Parravicini was an Argentine actor who primarily worked during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema, performing on both stage and in films. From an aristocratic family, he was a relative of the artist Benjamín Solari Parravicini (1898-1974). He began his career singing música criolla, a Latino folk genre of music that exists in many countries throughout Latin America. He appeared in more than three hundred theatrical works and films, becoming one of the leading figures of Argentine entertainment. Facing cancer, Parravicini committed suicide in 1941.

During the 1940s, she participated in films with comedians like Pepe Arias, Pepe Iglesias "El Zorro", Niní Gambier, Mirtha Legrand and Carlos Estrada. Her most acclaimed film work occurred in Elvira Fernández, vendedora de tienda (1942) by Manuel Romero, Cinco besos by Luis Saslavsky and La Rubia Mireya for which she received the 1948 Best Comedy Actress Award from the Argentine Film Critics Association.
Estudios San Miguel was an Argentine film studio that was active in the 1940s and early 1950s. It flourished during the golden age of Cinema of Argentina, and at its peak was one of the major studios in Buenos Aires. Genres ranged from musical comedy to costume drama and gaucho thriller. Films included La guerra gaucha, co-produced with Artistas Argentinos Asociados, and the comedy Juvenilia (1943), both of which won several major awards. Eva Duarte, soon to become the first lady of Argentina as Eva Perón, appeared in two of the studio's films in 1945. The studio became overextended financially and ceased production after 1952.
