AmerUs (also known as AmerUs Life or AmerUs Group) was an American financial services company based in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Brotherhood of American Yeomen was established in 1897. It was renamed "Yeoman Mutual Life" in 1932, and "American Mutual Life" in 1938. American Mutual Life merged with Central Life Insurance in 1994, forming AmerUs Life. [1] [2] In 2006, AmerUs was purchased by Aviva for $2.9 billion. [3]

The Johnny Bright incident was a violent on-field assault against African-American player Johnny Bright by Wilbanks Smith, a white opposing player during an American college football game held on October 20, 1951, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The game was significant in itself as it marked the first time that an African-American athlete with a national profile and of critical importance to the success of his team, the Drake Bulldogs, had played against Oklahoma A&M College at Oklahoma A&M's Lewis Field. Bright's injury also highlighted the racial tensions of the times and assumed notoriety when it was captured in what was later to become both a widely disseminated and eventually Pulitzer Prize–winning photo sequence.

It also reveals the backstory between himself and Stephen Katz, who appeared in A Walk in the Woods and Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe. Bryson also describes and comments on American life in the 1950s. The title of the book comes from an imaginary alter-ego Bryson invented for himself in his childhood, who has the ability to vaporise people.
