America's Blood Centers

Founded in 1962, America's Blood Centers (ABC) is an association of independent non-profit blood centers that operates in Canada and the United States. ABC member organizations operate more than 600 blood collection sites providing close to 60 percent of the U.S., and a quarter of the Canadian, blood supply. These blood centers serve more than 150 million people and provide blood products and services to more than 3,500 hospitals and healthcare facilities across North America. All ABC U.S. members are licensed and regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Kate Fry, MBA, CAE, currently leads the organization as Chief Executive Officer. [1] [2]

ABC Awards of Excellence

The annual Awards of Excellence are given to individuals, civic groups, media organizations, corporations and advocates involved in blood donation through the awards ceremony. By 2021, it has been held for 24 years. [13]

Annual Nexcare Give Program Celebrates

Nexcare is 3M's personal health care brand. Annual Nexcare Give Program Celebrates is a national event in partnership with the Nexcare brand, American Blood Centers, and the American Red Cross. The campaign aims to raise awareness and inspire action by providing donors with Nexcare bandages designed in a different theme each year as a badge of honor, and to thank donors and encourage others to participate on World Blood Donor Day (June 14).

3rd Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 14–19, 2011.
  • The bandage theme for this giveaway was derived from the latest runway trends of the time and featured vibrant designs such as V-shaped, plaid, chevron, zebra print, and "classic." The idea expressed in this issue is "helping to save a life is always in style." [14]

4th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 11–14, 2012.
  • The 2012 designs are drawn from the fashion, design, and pop culture of the 1950s through the 2000s, including everything from vintage polka dots and tie-dye to plaid checks. This vintage design conveys the theme of "giving blood is timeless". [15]

5th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 10–14, 2013.
  • The theme for 2013 is "It's Always in Season to Give Blood". All bandages this year have the text "give" and carry on the design inspiration from season 4. [16]

6th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 9–14, 2014.
  • The theme for 2014 is "The Art of Giving". The bandage designs include impressionism, abstract art, contemporary art, pop art, and street art. And each bandage has the word "give" on it. [17]

7th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 8–14, 2015.
  • In 2015, the Nexcare Give Program is themed "Creating a Culture of Giving". The designs were inspired by patterns and textiles from eight different cultures and locations. [18]

8th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 6–14, 2016.
  • This year, Nexcare's theme is "Feel the Beat, Give Blood." The bandages are inspired by five unique dances from different parts of the world. [19]

9th Annual Nexcare give Program

  • June 7–14, 2017.
  • Using landmarks and locations from cities around the world as inspiration, the 2017 bandages are designed around the theme "Roll up a sleeve and give where you live" to celebrate all those who give in their communities. [20]

Congress Recognizes

In 2005 ABC Recognized by the House of Representatives:

"Resolved, That the House of Representatives— (1) recognizes the role of America's Blood Centers and its members in— (A) providing life saving blood to patients, including the military in times of war and the Nation in times of disaster; (B) ensuring the safety of that blood supply; and (C) promoting essential blood donor initiatives; (2) acknowledges the efforts made by member community blood centers and other blood organizations to promote and protect the safety and adequacy of blood components provided to patients; and (3) recognizes the need to promote a stable blood supply and increase volunteer participation of blood donors." [21]

Global blood donation campaign

August 17, 2016, ABCparticipate in the multination Missing Type campaign. This campaign teaches awareness of the need for blood groups in 21 countries around the world. [22]

Partnering with ADRP

May 2016, ADRP becomes an international division of ABC and will operate under a commercial charter. Together, the two bring expertise and capabilities to recruitment, blood collection and donor management, creating a better blood donation environment. [23] [24]

Contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic

Expand Collection of Convalescent Plasma

Nearly 60% of U.S. blood is supplied by ABC-led community-based independent blood centers. Also 75% of COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma was provided by their combined efforts with BARDA. [25] [26]

Joint Statement

During the pandemic, the AABB, American Blood Centers, and the American Red Cross issued a statement that they were joining forces to collaborate on blood supply efforts during the pandemic [27] [28]

ABC Newsletter

ABC Newsletter is a weekly publication that includes news from blood centers and other organizations in the transfusion community. Individuals who work at ABC member blood centers can subscribe for free. The annual fee is $390. [29]

ABC Blood Bulletin

A quarterly journal written by experts in transfusion medicine and peer-reviewed by ABC's SMT Publications Committee. [30]

Transfusion medicine is the branch of medicine that encompasses all aspects of the transfusion of blood and blood components including aspects related to hemovigilance. It includes issues of blood donation, immunohematology and other laboratory testing for transfusion-transmitted diseases, management and monitoring of clinical transfusion practices, patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collections, cellular therapy, and coagulation. Laboratory management and understanding of state and federal regulations related to blood products are also a large part of the field.

A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications by a process called fractionation. Donation may be of whole blood, or of specific components directly (apheresis). Blood banks often participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it.

A cord blood bank is a facility which stores umbilical cord blood for future use. Both private and public cord blood banks have developed in response to the potential for cord blood in treating diseases of the blood and immune systems. Public cord blood banks accept donations to be used for anyone in need, and as such function like public blood banks. Traditionally, public cord blood banking has been more widely accepted by the medical community. Private cord blood banks store cord blood solely for potential use by the donor or donor's family. Private banks typically charge around $2,000 for the collection and around $200 a year for storage.

Canadian Blood Services is a non-profit charitable organization that is independent from the Canadian government. The Canadian Blood Services was established as Canada's blood authority in all provinces and territories except for Quebec in 1998. The federal, provincial and territorial governments created the Canadian Blood Services through a memorandum of understanding. Canadian Blood Services is funded mainly through the provincial and territorial governments.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, simply known as Lifeblood, is a branch of the Australian Red Cross responsible for the collection and distribution of blood and biological products in Australia. Lifeblood employs around 3,700 employees across scientific, clinical and support services, processing over one and a half a million blood donations each year. Lifeblood is primarily funded by the Australian Government and state and territory governments.

The Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) is a humanitarian organization and an auxiliary team to the medical service of the Lebanese Army. Its headquarters is in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut. Founded in 1945, the organization comprises a number of approximately 7,000 members/volunteers and 200 staff personnel. The society works with the International Federation and the ICRC, and on a bilateral basis with the Norwegian and the French Red Cross. The LRC also works with the relevant components of the Lebanese authorities, with UN agencies and NGOs.

Many countries have laws, regulations, or recommendations that effectively prohibit donations of blood or tissue for organ and corneal transplants from men who have sex with men (MSM), a classification irrespective of their sexual activities with same-sex partners and of whether they identify themselves as bisexual or gay. Temporary restrictions are sometimes called "deferrals", since blood donors who are found ineligible may be found eligible at a later date. However, many deferrals are indefinite meaning that donations are not accepted at any point in the future, constituting a de facto ban. Even men who have monogamous relations with their same-sex partners are found ineligible.

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center serves as the sole continuous provider of blood to Houston and its surrounding communities. It is one of the largest independent community blood centers in the United States serving 26 counties from the Texas Gulf Coast to Brazos Valley to East Texas. The nonprofit supplies blood to more than 170 hospitals and health care institutions including the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is a proud member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Blood Centers of America, South Central Association of Blood Banks, Texas Medical Center and America's Blood Centers. Operations started on January 1, 1975, with 64 employees. Today, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has over 650 staff members. The overall supervision of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's activities is the responsibility of a chief executive officer appointed by the board of trustees. Medical supervision and direction for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center are provided by a Chief Medical Officer also appointed by the board of trustees.

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is held on June 14 each year. The event was organised for the first time in 2004, by four core international organizations: the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (IFBDO) and the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. World Blood Donor Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Chagas Disease Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Patient Safety Day, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week and World AIDS Day.

Carter BloodCare is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Bedford, Texas. Carter BloodCare currently provides more than 440,000 blood products annually to over 200 hospitals serving patients in more than 50 counties across North, Central and East Texas. One of the largest blood centers in operation in the United States, Carter BloodCare’s mission is “we save lives by making transfusion possible.”.

Blood donation in Bangladesh is an activity conducted by several different organisations. As of 2011, about 25% of the nation's blood supply came from voluntary donation, 20–25% from paid donors, and 50–55% from one-time donation for a specific patient.

Bloodworks Northwest is a blood bank and medical research institute headquartered in Seattle, Washington, that serves 90 hospitals in western Washington and Oregon. It has formerly been known as the Puget Sound Blood Center and King County Central Blood Bank.

Memorial Blood Centers is a blood bank in Minnesota, United States. It is a division of Innovative Blood Resources (IBR), and supplies blood to hospitals and clinic partners, national blood centers, biotechnology companies, research institutions, in the US and abroad.

Dana Devine is a blood transfusion researcher and the president of AABB. She was the editor-in-chief of Vox Sanguinis from 2012 to 2020. Devine is also the Chief Scientist at Canadian Blood Services and the director of the Centre for Blood Research at the University of British Columbia. In 2015, she was elected as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2022, she was elected as the President of the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion Collaborative.
