The award was first given following the 1982 season, with both pitchers and position players eligible. After the 1994 season, the Big Ten Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year award was created to honor the most outstanding pitcher.

Georgina Corrick is a British born, American raised professional softball player for Athletes Unlimited Softball. She played college softball for the South Florida Bulls. She is also a member of the Great Britain women's national softball team. She was the first pitching Triple Crown winner in NCAA Division I history.
